There's an interesting article on Green Car Reports about the development from GM of a "crate motor" system that's electric. Based off of the Bolt system it has motor, batteries, and brains.

That system would work a lot better for a rear-wheel-drive MH with a
trailer to carry the battery packs It is not really compatible with what I
want in an MH.

I work in an industry that produces different powerplant heavy duty vehicles including electric...knowing how many batteries it takes to move our vehicle leads me to believe we just dont have the space.

Now if you want to discuss Hydrogen Fuel Cell electric (which we do as well) you might have an ear.....

I remember when Bill Lear ( Lear jet, etc., etc.) was alive, he retrofitted
several San Francisco muni busses with a hydrogen fuel cell powerful enough
to climb those hills, no problems. They did their testing phase about the
time he fell ill, and not much ever came of it. Ahead of his time, I think.
He was a maverick.

Roughly ten years ago, when I was still working in corporate events audio I was head audio on the GM press events at the LA Auto show. At this event they were giving, by lottery applications, I believe 12 GM Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to be driven in the greater LA area free for 6 months evaluation. You just had to keep daily notes and impressions. They had set up refueling infrastructure in the area for this test. So the tech has been around a while now. I also got to chat with the woman exec that was in charge of the project, and how the large truck platform, including Tahoe/Suburban was the best GM vehicle family. I had my GMC up on my screen saver and also got to talk with Troy Clarke (Head of GM North America) about the TZEs and he told me about his GNX track test where the professional driver did a 360 and into the weeds with him in the pass seat when the boost came on.

Nice idea, but don't you loose a whole a lot of efficiency of electric motor by transmitting power through the automatic transmission?
The whole point of EV drive is to eliminate all the "bits" between where the power comes from (motor) and where it goes to (driven wheel).
Plus, as many pointed out - a bed full of batteries sort of defeats the utilitarian purpose of a pickup truck. I suppose if we are willing to raise the floor in our GMC by 12-14" to accommodate who knows how many batteries (like in the submarines), it will make a concept vehicle...

H2 can deliver the power but buying h2 is a problem large quantities of H2
are not readily available and the true cost is on par with California
premium gas.

Talked to one of the engineers at SEMA about this truck today and asked about price. He said he only helped build them and had no idea what the price might be. Interesting for sure but not really a practical alternative for us, IMHO.

Not sure about cost as of today but as it starts being used more and more for public transit vehicles over the next couple years you will see the availability increase. Its actually not hard to make as we have a good natural gas info structure and lots of water.....lol.

Cost on this is going to be crippling....concidering a used Tesla pack is about 12000$ (about the same battery capacity i see in the photo)....the HV harnessing, motor inverter(s), motor and cooling/heating package....my guess is between 25 to 35k for something powerful enough to move 12000lbs at speed/distance that is reasonable.

So just to put this in perspective for most folks.....it takes about a 480Kv battery system to move a 48500lb vehicle 200 miles from fully charged....so 42 lithium ion batteries putting out 110.8v or 11540kwhr (approx) each at full 80% discharge capacity. That battery setup weighs in at about 7000lbs and takes about 250 minutes to charge at safe charge rates of about 350v (your leaf is charging at about 15 to 25).

How fast and how far do you wanna go did you say????.......lol.

The way Johnny wrote this reminds me of a humorous incident of years past that at least all the juice smart people here will appreciate....

Before the age of modern electronics (yes, I am that old), the flash that some photographers used ran on a 510V battery. These really did exist at one time. They lived in a case, and when the case was closed, two pins pierced the celluloid cover to connect it. I was in my room at the dorm and preparing to go shoot some sports to maybe sell some images for money. By the meter I had, the battery was marginal so I replaced it. A classmate came in to see what I was doing because he had seen the test flashes. I told him that I was changing out the flash battery because it was bad. I was turned around and packing my kit when I heard the scream.

When I turned around, classmate was standing frozen in place holding the test probes of my meter (yes a 260), and he had let his fingers slide down on the probes. A dead 510V flash battery is still about 480V DC.

Many years ago, on Armed Forces Day, the Oregon National Guard Unit I
belonged to had moved several pieces of our Ordinance, and our
surveillance radar unit which had a range of 150 miles or so, to a static
display in front of Marion County Courthouse. We were sweeping at extreme
range and allowing visitors to see how we could detect flying objects at
great distances. Directly across a 4 lane city street was a Pay Less drug
store. A customer exited the store with a whole paper sack full of Press 25
flashbulbs. When the sweep and the customer aligned, all of his flash bulbs
went off simultaneously. The clerks from the PayLess store came running to
the Radar Unit, eyes as big as saucers, and jabbering excitedly about
exploding flash bulbs, etc. We turned down the ranging to local, and that
seemed to solve the problem. You do not want to be in the apex of that
array when it is operating. Birds swerve away from it.
