New Engine Follies - Final [message #349788] |

I just got off the phone with John Beaver of Beaver Racing Engines who rebuilt the 455 I've spent the last few months getting into my coach and cleaning up the fittings and stuff. My end of the conversation: "Mr. John, it runs like a stripedey - assed ape, pulls like a mule, and idles smoothly. Oil pressure is 80 cold, 75 running, 60 idle. Temp is 180 solid on the highway at speed, slightly lower idling or running city streets slowly."
So, FINALLY, the thing is installed and working, with new steering pump, Cardone water pump -H model, new Manny Tranny (1000 miles before I lunched the old engine) and the like. I'll run it down to Perry in three weeks, and back. That puts 250 - 300 miles on the breakin. Mr. John says that's plenty, put the regular running oil in it, check no metal in the filter, and drive it like you stole it.
Now, on to the brakes...

Mike, if I had the 'capabilities' it would have gone in in a day It does show, however. it is possible to swap the engine singlehandedly. With a borrowed (from Chuck) trolley. I had the stinger lift on hand from past mechanic exercises.
I'll note, however, looking at a big opening in the front of the coach can be daunting. Had I not spent money at that point I might of lost interest.
Meantimes, anyone got a built LA engine or a /6 they are looking to get rid of? I've a nice little '65 A body Mopar wagon looking for an engine. I'll either go for a little LA V8 or get a /6 and build as a Hyper-Pak.

This comment is not directed at anyone particularly. So don't get your
knickers in a knot, take umbrage, etc.
Procrastination is ALWAYS your enemy. The actual work of engine
swapping is fraught with "what if's". Like, "What if I can't get the
manifold bolts loose?" or etc. Just get after it. Not going to be any
easier if you wait a few minutes, days, weeks, etc.
Once the actual work commences, the job dictates what comes next.
Break the whole process into a series of simpler, do-able tasks, and before
you know it, that sucker is hanging off a cherry picker in the middle of
your shop. Done it many, many times. There is a challenge there for me, but
for you there is only dread of failure. Roll those sleeves up, and dive in.
There ain't no Bears in there.

Hupy has the idea. Once I picked it up, every time I had a free day it was like "Today the exhaust hooks up"; "Today the front of the engine accessories go on" etc. You get the sense of accomplishment for the specified task, which negates looking at all of it and going 'Sheesh<tm> I'll never get there...'. At most of our ages, one reasonable simple task per day is about what we can handle. The other sense is when you park it beside a 500K diesel pusher and the crowd gathers around you instead of him. Very satisfying.
I miss Bean Station, much of this was done in a day by five guys who wanted the pit next.

At age 79 I choose my tasks wisely and carefully - try to do something of significance every day but also try to not over do it. Big projects make me sore for about 4 days running!!!

The name of the game is ya gotta do wat ya gotta do. At age 78 I pulled my GMC into my garage with my engine making weird noises I finally figured it was the main bearing thrust was shot. My thought was I'm too old for this but it has too be pulled and no one will help. I rigged up an I beam and gantry then pulled the engine and tranny sent the tranny to Manny to make sure it was good and remove the shift kit. Tore down the engine took the block too the machine shop and replaced or rebuilt as needed then put it back together with no help. It wasn't fun but it is doable if you can still move and crawl just don't cut corners you don't want to do it again.

And I now have the leaky brake line replaced thanks to Advance lending me a double flare kit robust enough to double flare the PolyArmor line I had in 3/16. Tomorrow I bleed after I get my hands all greasy unclippingg the old line and putting the new in the clip. Then check/grind wheel clearance on the new calipers and make sure the flex lines don't touch the tires lock to lock. A couple laps down I 85 to prove the brakes. and then I can start on the inside cleaning and put the reupholstered dinette and couch back in, and start researching routes to Patterson. Last time some of us stayed in a Mississippi park just off I 10 and took the next morning to run on into Patterson. Freeway options are through Montgomery or through Birmingspam. I*'ll do Montgomery. 6 hunnert miles and change is to me a two day trip. I can do it easily in one in my car, but I'd rather just sleaze along in the GMC. Last time going home I stayed in a park on a river which emptied into the Mobile bay bay, and now I can't find it again. Lots of fishermen stay there. It was either a city or county place at the time.

Johnny, Judy and I are kicking around the idea of attending a GMCMI rally
in 2020. Patterson, La. is about 2600 miles from where we are. That is 5+
days travel one way. With some sightseeing through the Southwest on the
return drive, we would probably have 10 days on the road, plus the length
of the Rally at Patterson. Long time away from home.
Sioux Falls is 1000 miles closer to where we are, so it would take a bunch
less travel time to attend it. Just kicking it around right now. Lotta
"if's" come into play between then and now. Are you planning to attend
Sioux Falls?
But, if push comes to shove, we could fly into Baton Rouge, rent a
car. Cost is about the same. But, money is not the only deciding factor
here. Time seems to be a precious commodity these days, and you can't get
the ones wasted back. Just sayin.

Sioux Falls is farther than I range in the GMC. I may increase it some with the new (read more reliable) squirrel. Not in the cards for 2020 though. You're about as far from here - or Patterson - as you can get.
The early year is shaping up St Louis, Louisville, Lexington, the Carolinas, Alabama and tennessee. for shows. Some in tyhe GMC, some Air BnB depending on a lot of factors. A major one being a nearby base with a famcamp, RV sites at shows are approaching Motel Sleaze prices.
In the midst of this is a month waitering for Paula while her new knee settles in.

We are trying to get the time off from work to go to Patterson ourselves. If you do go, I have space in my driveway for your GMC. And a extra bedroom. You are welcome to use. 270 miles from here to Patterson.
Also good sippin tequila, blue cheese olive martinis, local Texas beers, rib eye steaks, pork ribs, gulf shrimp, lazy boy recliners, washing machine and dryer, blended sissy drinks, M1's, M1A's(or anything 30 cal), cable tv, Texas music, 130 feet of shoreline, and a full roll of Copenhagen!
Although I have to warn you, Sydney will talk your ear off......hence the good sippin tequila!!!
