Hello everyone
I own a 1977 Palm Beach and never had the guts to talk to the forum but have been following
I have the GMC for about 6 years I live on a steep hill in PA
trying to find a 3.55or3.70 final drive to get me up the hill I can make it but the engine is laboring
Cant afford a new unit Thanks a Bunch Laszlo

I hope you get lucky and find a final drive from a wrecked coach, since they really wake up the engine. To my way of thinking these are luxury items and not necessities, so spending on them has to be with money that can easily be spared. But then I'm not full-timing or depending on the rig for travel.

My '76 Palm Beach was lavished with extras from my beloved PO and one of those extras was lower gears. I've never driven a standard coach but have always thought mine was absolutely able to tackle anything. I hope you find the time to post your thoughts and questions on many things here. We try to be respectful but sometimes come off as harsh, often unintended!

Jim K has the whole final drive gears nailed, and somebody else has a different method of reducing the ratio, but I don't remember who - others will fill in the blanks!

Anyone that you trust on differential work can change it, the bear is the labor getting to it.
If you were ever thinking about having your transmission refreshed, Manny can swap in a different chain drive at the time and do the same thing and you wouldn't have to change the speedometer gear.

You should be able to stop at the bottom, pull it into l;ow manually, and then go easily albeit slowly up without bothering the transmission. As I understand it, the key is manually shift it to second or low, this puts quite a bit more pressure on the clutch packs than letting it downshift itself.
