I like my original cord. It looks like a 50 amp and has a 50 amp plug. But it is actually a cord marked 40 amp.
A 50 amp cord is too thick and hard to wind. A 40 amp cord is plenty heavy and that is what GM supplied in the motorhome. Most people refer to it as a 50 amp.

The circuit breaker box has two 20 amp breakers so when the plug is connected to the receptacle in the electric compartment each line goes to a 20 amp breaker.

It will run two air conditioners a microwave, toaster and coffee pot and the electric water heater all at the same time

Yes, the supply cable only needs to supply as much current as the main
breaker. And adaptation of the electrical system, including the circuit
breakers in the box, is NOT a trivial exercise -- definitely not something
for anyone to attempt who doesn't already know the implications (Such as
the fact that the OEM 40 amp cable is actually suitably wired for plugging
into a 240 vac socket!)

Unless you have some compelling reason to have a larger capacity, I would stay with exactly what was originally installed originally. Upgrading to 50 (40amp) service requires some additional changes inside the power panel too. Keep in mind that 30 amp service is 120 volt service while 50 (40) amp service is 240 volt service . The change will require a second main breaker and changing the buss bars inside the breaker box.

Usually corroded (green) wires only extend 6 or 12 inches from the end of the cable. Trim off the first 6 or 12 inches and see if the wires are copper color again. If they are. install a new plug and use the old cable.

I actually cut it back 2 feet after i saw how bad it was to do exactly as you said but it is still peppered with green....so new cable its getting.

Rich, The local Surplus store has had 30A 25ft RV cords male to pigtail for under $20.00, you might want to check there if you have a local surplus store. I haven't seen them at my local store for a couple of months though.

I've seen them in the surplus section at Princess Auto from time to time as well.
