I need some help locating the correct washer for my outside rearview mirror,
circa 1995 or so. The base is attached to the coach and a bolt (3/8 or so)
goes up into the mirror face itself. Between the metal of the base and the
metal of the mirror is a special material washer. Rubber is too soft, nylon
is too hard. I once was told that Ford carried it but no luck with talking
that up to the parts department. If it is not just right, I can't tighten
down enuf to keep the mirror positioned in place. And I have used a cheater
on a ratchet to the point of breakage. Helpful suggestions please.

Deann,

I am trying to picture this washer. It is fiber or something like that?

I am thinking about going to a good hardware store and looking through the plumbing stuff. Faucet washers and such.

If we knew what it is made out of we could always make one given the correct measurements. ID, OD, and thickness. I could chuck one up in the lathe or the Bridgeport at the airport.

You say rubber is too soft, How about a double rubber washer or a single thin fiber or nylon one plus a single rubber one. There are fiber washers of most sizes in the hardware store.

I am having problems with ideas since I really do not know what you are looking for. Is the mirror manufacturer still around? If so have you tried them?

Hi Dean,

I started to post this yesterday, and realized that I don't really know what I am talking about (this remains true; with respect to the matter at hand, anyway... Mad ).

My best guestimate, after looking at the ones From my Ford mirror, is that they are made from something like this.

https://www.mcmaster.com/8599k31

Shore 70A is pretty dang hard.

The ones on the Ford are 1/16" thick and also petrified (don't want to get too rambunctious with them).

Good luck,
