I am re-assembling after the intake manifold, aluminum water pump and new AC compressor, and as I piece together the venturi horse collar, and it's support pieces, I am wondering how many times I do this before changing it out to the 2 piece from Jim K. Or do I not re-invent the wheel? I know the new 2 piece is needed if I change to the electronically controlled fan.
Thoughts? Thanks,

Jack

I much prefer the two piece shroud. It makes things a lot less complicated and easier to work on in the future. I think you will too.

It's like the radiator frame, depends how often you take it off. Both work, the collar is a total pain in the ass to remove and put back. Once every two or three eyars, so what. Twice a year, buy the split shroud.

If you've already got it apart. Save some work - scrap the collar and install the shroud.

Go with the 2 piece / no horse collar shroud. It is probably the best upgrade I have ever done to the GMC. Mine has been on for around 15 years and has repeatedly saved a lot of work during that time.

If it can save you time and frustration, it is worth the cost difference.

Well...

My old horse collar is now hanging on the block wall on the side of my house - with a beautiful staghorn growing out of it.

I'm planning to hang the old cam timing gear set and chain nearby.

I had mine out for a timing chain, water pump, ac compressor, radiator recore project, took off the horse collar ('76), cut the shroud in half and pop-riveted brackets on for connecting. Hardest part was wrestling the oil cooler lines. The later model shrouds and Applied's cover the whole radiator unlike the stock '76 one.

use zip ties to hold it together in place

You might [cough!] decide to just leave them in, and just snip to remove

Nick took my order this morning for the new 2 piece and some radiator pads.
I think I will enjoy the extra space to work in front of the engine.

THANKS everyone!!

I'm wondering about the total coverage compared to the partial coverage of the stock shroud.as GM designed. Better for fan to pull air through all the core, but may be more restrictive to natural ram air cooling as it all has to get thru the "funnel" and past fan. Any comments?

John,
In 77-78 they went to full shroud coverage.
Maybe felt that when the fan clutch locked up it could cool faster by
pulling air through the whole radiator.

I have a 77 455 that does not have full coverage. Maybe that's s 403 thing?

John,
I think your correct. It was cost wise less to do oneW/o the collar on the
403. brackets and ring.
