My newly acquired '77 Birchaven came with a shattered rear window,
courtesy of some vandals with a hammer.
This is the rear bath floor plan.
First question: Is it worth having a window in the bathroom? The
sightseeing opportunities and family time are a bit limited but natural
light is nice for applying makeup. Put something solid there instead?
Second Question: If a window is a good idea, glass or Lexan?
And my preliminary query of local glass people gave an estimate of about
$975 installed (glass) including a new gasket if needed. Reasonable or
keep looking?

IF the people have the pattern, they can do it , but including
installation the price is good. No insurance?

Glass only. Never lexan.
Plastic/lexan will not last long. Will scratch And look like crap in short order. I made that mistake years ago on a back window on a jeep hardtop.
Never heard what others have paid. But usually they get glass cut and installed. Others have found doner used glass, but that has to be tough to get that removed/installed without breaking.
Years ago Jim Bounds had a tinted window available but shipping is a problem.
Any glass I would install now, I would want a ceramic solar film installed on.

Thank Jim,
I just purchased the coach with the known shattered rear window.
I may be wrong but I feel like using insurance to fix something that was
defective (and known to be defective) when purchased isn't what
insurance is for.
If I had bought it with good glass and then it shattered on the way home
after picking it up then that (IME) would be a valid insurance claim.
Those on the list more knowledgeable than I may enlighten me.

I love the windows of a
GMC. But in your case with a rear bath, if filling that space with a panel is a huge cost savings, that might be Ok to do. Allow for maybe some storage???
If you do it careful, you could always go back to a window in the future. I am sure filling it properly so it looks factory and does not leak is not cheap either.

If you can get a template of the rear window there really isn't much to
changing it. It is a 2 man job though...one to keep it from dropping out
and the other to push. remember the expansion strip goes on the Inside when
replacing. You'll need soap and a full length string......to get it on the
fiberglass edge with the glass in it.
I took one out with my whipper snipper and a stone. I have a template but I
am currently in Florida and the paper template is in NS. If you can wait a
couple of weeks, I can send it to you.

I watched one of our glass guys 8 or 10 years ago make and install one on a Saturday morning. The customer decided to go with a tinted plexiglass one. The glass guy said NOT to use polycarbonate. While almost unbreakable, its surface scratches easily. The customer was cautioned to only use soap and lots of water to clean the outside and plastic windshield cleaner like PlastX (Walmart} or one of the aviation / motorcycle types using a clothe diaper micro fiber towel on the inside. The last time I saw it, it still looked great.
I replaced my airplane windshield and side windows with plexiglass ones 25 years ago and they still look new using those cleaning instructions.
He made the windshield on site with the old one as a template. He used a band saw, a big table saw, and band type sander to get the edges smooth and slightly tapered. It took him less than a hour to make it. He had to special order the large of tinted plastic. I do not know if you can put ceramic tint on a plastic window.
Removal and installation was no time at all. Maybe 10 to 15 minutes to get it out in one piece, and 20 to 30 minutes to install the new one and polish it. I helped hold the large piece of glass on the way out and the large new plastic one on the way in.
I think he charged him 2.0 to 2.5 hours of labor plus the cost of the plexiglass. The customer also ordered food delivered for lunch for the three of us.
It turns out this is frequently done on buses and some trucks. I have a tinted plastic window in the door of my GMC but it was installed by a PO so I know nothing about it.
