Made some new friends this week. Started out as a black list assist. They
had just left from picking up their Royale somewhere from a GMC Vendor in
the midwest. They had purchased a bunch of new parts including a lower
geared final drive which they wanted to have installed before their trip
back to their home in Wasilla, Alaska. So, they detoured to Cinebar to
have it installed. Once there, much more work was performed, and they left
for home. They got to Boise, Idaho and had a blowout on the left front.
When they jacked it up and checked for slack in the front end, they
uncovered a whole bunch of play in the hub and knuckle as well as the lower
ball joint. He looked up my name on the black list, and called me. I
referred him to Bill Hubler in Caldwell, Idaho, near where he was. Bill
apologized that he could not take on the job. After talking with the new
owner, I told him to come on by my shop.
Hubs, knuckles, and wheel bearings and seals were all needed. After
several phone calls to Applied, the hubs, knuckles and front bearings were
on the way before they arrived on Tuesday. Thanks to Nick and Jim at
Applied.
On Tuesday, we jacked up the coach and removed the old hubs and
knuckles, after further inspection, the lower ball joints were determined
to also be needed. So, my local supplier sourced some for us, and had them
that afternoon. They were the wrong joints which we could only determine by
very careful measurements. The tapered part was smaller than the GMC joints
enough to protrude all the way through the knuckle, and never tighten on
the taper. A game of a few thousandths of an inch. So, more vendor
searching, going the extra mile, to secure the correct joints in Tacoma,
Washington. First thing this morning, I picked them up, brought them back
and verified the fit. Owner buttoned it up, torqued everything, put in new
cotter keys, back on the ground, hooked up the toad, and headed North to
Alaska. They stayed several days and nights with us, shared adult beverages
and good food with us, they took us out for great Mexican food and
Margaritas, shared some great stories. I am sure we will meet again. What a
great group of people. I count my blessings, everyday. They are many.

Gary,
You are very aware of the SYSTEM we have in our community. You have been a
presenter at one of our Western States Rally as well. Thank you.
The NEW owners must become aware of us and what we bring to the table.
I receive over 20 calls a day and manage to answer ALL.

Jim H,
We all are glad you assisted them and went out of your way to drive total
of 300 miles to get the right parts.
They sent you the Toronado part, not the GMC MH.
I thought we gave you the correct part#.

Gary,
I had the same issue with the motor cutting out and running poorly back in 2009. I had an aftermarket tach mounted on the steering column.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/general-pictures/p66472-gedc003211.html
A word on mounting your tach when you add one is to try and mount the tach with your run RPM in the 12 o’clock position so your needle is pointing straight up when your at cruising speed.
Was in Greenville, SC heading to FL and as we left the RV park is was running, missing and generally running poorly. I had remembered a post on the gmcnet that one member had had a similar issue and unplugged the tach. Sure enough, that cured the problem and that tach was in the junk.
For those of you that noticed:
I had added a voltmeter in the dash in the same location that the optional factory voltmeter was installed.
An O2 exhaust meter is just to the left of the dash.
The set of 3 gauges show the RT, LT airbag pressure and the center is system pressure.
The black box with the switch and light are a manual brake controller for the towed that allows to add brakes with out braking the coach.

Jim K., absolutely you gave me the correct part number. Thank you very
much.
That was after I had already ordered what I thought was the correct
parts from my local source. They bolted in exactly like the originals,
visually resembled the originals, but the tapered pin was just a few
thousandths of an inch smaller than the correct ones. Needed a micrometer
to determine the difference.
In defense of my local guy, they gave me full credit, no restocking
fee. They found the correct ball joints in Tacoma, and had them shipped
overnight to their store at no cost to me. Service like that, you know what
it is worth. If any of your customers bitch, give them my phone number. I
will set them straight, quickly. Thanks for all you do.

Thanks J.R,
The Autometer 0-6000 will be great as the 2800-3000 rpm band that I run in will put the needle straight up.

There's a better way to put a tach in. I assume you aren't winding the engine past 4000 rpm. Get an 8000 universal tach, set it for four cylinder service, and renumber the dial using rub off numbers. Mount it right side up and the run range is across the top arc. I did this with a little SunPro gauge and mounted it above and between the two clusters. If you hotrod your coach, you can set it for 6 cylinder service and do a bit of arithmetic, etic to figure where the new numbers go.

That's not an unusual occurrence. My engine began to miss on a trip a few
months back. Since the tach had been a little erratic, I immediately
suspected it and disconnected it from the distributor. Engine hasn't
missed since. That was a several year old VDO, which I haven't yet
replaced. That's not the first one I've had trouble with, and John Beaver
tells me it's one of the first suspects when they have trouble with racing
engines.

Put your oscilloscope on the DC coming out of your alternator.
My erratic tach readings and blown modules were induced by an alternator that was sporadically making AC. Eric Tanner fought the same issue.

Dolph,
I might do that ('tho' I don't think it's the source of the problem -- I've
NEVER blown a module) if I hadn't given my 'scope to my grandsons. Next
time I have the coach there, I'll do it though.

I had a Westberg tac prior to getting my Mac dash and never had any problems with it. I then installed it into Walter Drew’s GMC. Walter lived in Santa Fe. I don’t remember who bought his GMC but it’s someone on this net.
Last summer I burned up 3 coils. I found that there was an intermittent short between the hot lead in the distributor and the tach lead.
After I replaced the wiring harness leading to the distributor it solved the problem.
