I have the compressor mounter loosely (yes, you can do it one-handed... if you have a bottle jack) and I note there's a gap between the upper bolt holes on the front and rear brackets of about 3/16 inch. The parts book shows the bolt going through the front bracket and threading into the rear bracket with nothing in between. Should there be a spacer between the two, or do I have something mismounted here?
Rear bracket mounts to a hole in the intake and a stud on the front rocker cover gasket. Front bracket bolts directly to the engine block in three places. I don't see a lot of room for movement here.

Update - I finally got it all to fit on, and found one hole stripped in the manifold. I'll either drill it bigger or helicoil<tm> it. shim the alternator tomorrow, get the belts on and tensioned, mount the new fan, and then put the radiator back. I'm going to upgrade to 3/8th transmission cooling lines per Manny's suggestion. I have to have L:aqnier Hydraulics make me up a new power steering pressure hose, this one was oozing. I'll speak to Mr John about pre oiling the engine. If he says it's safe I'll take the plugs out and spin it. Otherwise, the distributor comes out and run the pump with an electric drill. By the time the Summer rally gets here, it should be purring happily.

Johnny,

If you decide to pre-oil with the distributor shaft, remember that it turns
"backward" -- CCW.
