Sounds like the splined shaft on the FD. The FD input shaft goes in the trans coupler. Bob Dunahugh

From Keith's description, it sounds like what happened to Dave Roberts. In his case, the trans coupler between the FD and trans broke with a loud bang. No gear including park worked. Might be worth looking at.

The FD shaft could be fine. The coupler on the trans could have split. I can't remember right now if that coupler is a part of the trans output shaft. Ore just slides on the trans output shaft. Bob Dunahugh 78 Royale Iowa

Would the final drive be a cause of the split? Should i have it checked out?

Manny told me once that if the pinion bearings in the final drive fail,
that it nearly always takes out the transmission as well.

Furthermore, even excessive longitudinal play in the final drive input
shaft can take out a transmission. Most original final drives in motor home
use that that sort of wear. Play is supposed to 0.008-0.012”, as I recall.
