Can anyone let me know where to pick up window rubber for all the side and
rear windows? Instructions, pics or videos would also be extremely
helpful! Just started gutting my interior and finding that all windows are
leaking..seems like a good time to get this over with.

Also I have an original vacuum and all attachments if someone wants it

Thanks

I bought mine from Jim K and had a local auto glass installer do the work. We were having a windshield replaced and the idea camenup in conversation.

I am trying to do my window rubbers also.

JimKs site lists for 76 to 78 GMC's, I have a 74

I did get someone on the phone and he says it comes in 8 foot lengths. My small window needs 9' I think.
The front windows need 12 feet. He wasn't sure and asked to call back.

Never really done this before and the PO sort of hacked it in many pieces and now they are jambing the windows
when I try to open them.

Also, what is the best way to cut out the drain holes in the rubber? Can you use a cut off tool with a disk??

I seem to remember there might be metal wire inside that rubber along the bottom?????? I'm guessing, been awhile
since I messed with it.

Thanks all

Tell our guys you need 9',we stock them by the foot.
Maybe they thought it was for the cockpit glass.

Hey JimK

I roughly measured the rubber track to be about 12 feet for one large window and about 9 feet for the rear window.

Do I need to cut and put a seam midway up/down on the front edge of the window??? Can it be put in seamless??

What is the best way to cut the drain holes in the rubber track?? is there metal wire in the track?

Thanks

SLC,
Are you aware that there are two pieces per window that opens. One larger
than the other.
There is metal only in the original toll window tracks.

Not really.
The PO has a lot of pieces, pieced together, like a jigsaw puzzle. The rubber has aged and hardened. Now when the window tries to open it catches on the pieces and jambs or pulls the rubber from the track.

I just talked to JimK's guy and from what I understand, there should be only ONE seam, at the front middle of each window. The rest of the rubber should be one piece from that mid point to the end of the track.

He suggested it will not be the easiest part replacement I have ever done to the GMC. So I can hardly wait.

I thought someone, and I don't know who, had said to not use any adhesive, but he suggested using some in a couple spots to help keep the rubbers in the track.

The PO obviously had no idea what he was doing either and had a lot of cut up pieces laying around, I hope to do this right.

Maybe I missed something. Are you looking at replacing the rubber on the
out side or the trim rubber that goes around the window on the inside?

I don't think you missed anything Bruce.

It is probably my explanation.

The Large sliding window in the living room. I have two large windows in the main living area and the two smaller windows in the bedroom area. You unlatch the window and you can slide it open, in the rubber gasket.

There is no trim, just that gasket.

I need to replace the rubber gasket the window slides in. Mine are pretty old and need replacing. They are causing problems because of
how the PO installed all the cut-up pieces.

I believe Jim Bounds has a how-to video showing how to change the rubber channel without removing the glass.

For the water escape slot, use a round hole punch.

I've looked at a lot of info on the window rubber and if I could get some
help and/or clarification on the restoration process. Since there appears
to be a few different window types...and I am completely confused...so I
want to make sure I am doing the right thing and getting the right parts.
Me and my baby have a long distance relationship so I typically only get a
weekend at a time to make the repairs I want.

I have a 1973 26'...the 1st style of window.

1. Front cockpit windows - these are leaking pretty bad. Do these have to
be completely removed to fix? Stationary top piece and slider at the
bottom? It doesn't look that difficult to take the whole thing out so
probably will regardless.

2. Large slider windows on each side - I've watched Jim Bounds video on
replacing the track, but what do I do with the fixed panel? Do I have to
remove this? or just add a layer of rtv to it?

3. Small window in door and above kitchen area. Both of these are fixed,
no slider. Do these need removal or can they be re caulked?

4. Medium sliders in the bedroom...same questions as #2 above.

5. Rear window - re-caulk?

Thanks for the help.

Here are a couple pictures about rebuilding the early style windows:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/original-details/p36813-73-2f74-window-spline-details.html
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/original-details/p36815-73-2f74-window-spline-details.html

For the fixed windows in early coaches (and for the cockpit side windows fixed glass), there's this stuff called "glass setting tape".
I used "CRL Black 5/64" Sealstrip Glass Setting Tape" which is a kind of dense rubber/plastic strip, but there are other kinds.
5/64" was a tight fit.

Personally, if I had another early coach, I'd look for later style windows from a parts coach, if possible,
or maybe some of the aftermarket ones, though they don't typically open as wide. If replacement is not an option, they can be repaired,
but there are a lot of joints to seal.

Later style windows can be rebuilt without removing them from the coach (assuming they're well sealed to the coach body)
but it's easier to work on them out of the coach.

If you're just looking to replace the fuzzy channel for the sliding parts of the early windows, that's a good bit easier
and shouldn't require disassembly.

Hey folks.

I hope you don't mind, I bumped this thread up instead of creating a new one.

I am about to replace the sliding window seals for the coach windows.
I have a question......

I tried to research this, and found vids that shows someone just grabbing
the old seal and ripping it out of the window channel, with some dancing
with the window it self.

Then they continue the dance with the window to get the new seal in place.
Some seal adhesive was mentioned to keep it in place as well as cutting the
drains for the water to drain from the seals.
I think I am good on this.

But I found a vid, that said it was important NOT TO LOSE THE SPACERS THAT
WILL BE STUCK IN THE SEALANT........... Ok, so this is something that I
have not seen in the videos.

Anyone know what these spacers are about, do they exist or was this vid
just a one of a kind???

Do they get placed in a specific location, does it matter??

As always thanks all.
