We are safe and upright and have 50Amp AC, so other than being a little short of potable (I should be able to fix that in the morning, we are in pretty good shape - All things considered.

We are hold up at A-1 towing which is at the intersection of US-17 and SR 27-29 in South Carolina. This is very near Exit 21 on I-95 if you are looking at a map.

Now, the story....
We waited a long time for the right guy to show up and it was worth the wait.

A Landol 440 (biggest Landol I have ever seen) the showed up after hours of waiting, he looked things over and said he could haul us, but he couldn't get us out of the median. He called for reinforcements. What showed up next (after a bit of a wait) was the second biggest wrecker I have ever seen, do not think that this is any kind of a slam. These two guys were just amazing. I will be honest here and say that I am very accustom to having to tell people how to do what I need done......
This was not the case, these guys know how to do what...
It did not hurt at all when Mike (the Landol driver) showed me the picture of his friends GMC. The Wrecker driver also knew all about GMCs and together they worked in close concert to get Chaumière back to the road way so the Landol could pick her up safely without extending the known damage.

There is considerable collateral damage to both the running gear and the coach, but the failure was the lower control arm. That pulled the drive axle out of the inner CV joint, and then there is the damage caused buy plowing the furrow in the median. The radiator is out of place but does not seem to be leaking, in fact I have not seen evidence of anything leaking. (Hope - Hope)

So, I will need at least a right lower control arm and a drive axle. I have heard that you can unload a torsion bar by just letting the control arm down. If that is the case, can someone please confirm this. If it is not true, I am going to have to locate or get shipped in an unloading tool. Craig Lechowicz has everything I know I need, but he is in Michigan and that is about 900 miles away. I have other mail and notes coming in that I have not read yet. Isn't GMC net a great place to be???

I am looking forward to a good night's sleep and a bright morning. I am ingesting a chemical that should not be in motorfuel because I know it will aide in the sleeping. I will soon have enough that a keyboard will be a challenge and I still have to walk the dogs.....

Good night and thank you all.

Matt

Matt,

I can confirm that the torsion bar is ALMOST unloaded by releasing the
lower control arm -- I did it in Texas to re-insert the aft end of the bar
into the pork chop. But it needs a jack beneath the arm to reattach it.
Having no torsion bar tool, I then removed the swivel from the top of the
bottle jack, leaving a rounded end to fit the dimple in the pork chop for
height adjustment.

Do you need me to send you a TB tool (and the BIG wrench to fit it)?

Ken,

I do very much appreciate that information. As this lower arm has to come off and that was a serious consideration.
I have to get to a full evaluation today, in the daylight and rested. If there is anything you can do, I will ask.

I can confirm what Ken says. Almost 20 Years ago I had Buskirk (in Sandusky, Michigan) replace my passenger side lower control arm because the bracket that attaches the shock had broken off. All they did was jack it up, remove the wheel and the nut that holds the lower ball joint to the control arm. Upon release, down it went a very loud "BAM"!. The mechanic forgot that there was no shock (broken bracket) to hold the arm.

That unloaded the torsion bar all right. He did not have to use an unloading tool. I was not pleased with the procedure. But the price was right, as they didn't charge me for the control arm and only charged me for an hour of labor.

Just saw this. Glad to hear you are safe.

Don't have a lower control arm, and Ken is probably closer anyway, but let me know if you need an extra pair of hands, or an emergency refill of spirits - the package stores are closed today...

When you get the replacement arm installed, remember to leave the lower control arm bolts loose until she is sitting on all 6, thrn torque them. Orherwise the bushings are in a "wound up" state and tear prematurely. Per GM manuals over the years so you probably know that. Hope it's all "bolt on" repairs and have a look at the LH arm tip as well.

Back when I rebuilt my front end, I had read somewhere that it was okay to UNLOAD the torsion bar without the tool. so that's what I did (with some lubrication on the bolt, of course) and I didn't do any damage to the threads, or have any sort of issue doing it that way.

I will also confirm that I have taken off the lower control arm without using an unloader. Just put a a jack under it, disconnect the shock so it will drop down farther, then the ball joint, and go.

Problem is not removal. Particularly with broken lower ball joint and
lower shock mount. Getting the ride height correct upon re-assembly
requires a hefty torsion bar tool, and a 24" -1/2" drive breaker bar.
Obviously you need HUSKY jack stands, and a safety conscious attitude.
Clean the torsion bar adjustment bolt and nut, and lube them liberally with
moly grease. Do not try to raise the ride height with the bolts and nuts.
You risk stripping the threads if you do, and they are scarce.

I'm close to sending Matt a used control arm, cv shaft, shock absorber, sway bar link and torsion bar tool. Would have been heading to ups already if I hadn't put my torsion bar tool "somewhere special so I can find it" last time I loaned it out. If everything goes according to plan, it will get shipped later today, and down there either Wednesday (by ground) or tomorrow if by somewhat stunning air freight. Most of this stuff is coming from a spare front clip I have, and I still have to get the front control arm bolt out of the sleeve. (I'm hoping it's about to be air hammered out shortly, I figured all the neighbors didn't want that racket last night.). Then have to wriggle the torsion bar out of the socket, which also be interesting.

I spoke with Matt yesterday morning and compared notes on what he needed, although he still had some inspection/assessment to do. I suspect we both worked a little late last night, as I hadn't heard from him by the time I turned in. I left him an e-mail last night, and told him I'd call after lunch and see if he needed anything else before I boxed everything up. I'm a little concerned he has discovered other issues, but we'll see what's what as the day goes on.

Good to hear you and Mary are OK and safe!

Is I-95 jinxed for GMC's in that area? The exit 21 Shell station is where we discovered our water pump bearing failure 14 years ago.

Jim,

It may come that I have to ask for more help, but as of right now Craig is getting my package together.
The fact that you were still on the road and that you took a minor hit but that got handled, did not bother me, I knew that if I rang Applied phone, they could probably make it work.

It never occurred to me how close the inner CV is to the oil filter...
When mine pulled apart, it spread grease in it...

Craig is fortunately experienced with shipping heavy stuff. (Gee).

Next to Jane Michels, I guess I am fortunate.

This is the real value of the GMC Community.

Thanks to all.

Not in SC, but we broke down for about 4 hours on North Bound I95 in Georgia back in April 2013 on our way to Savannah for a wedding. We were fortunate that the engine quit right by a weigh station (mile marker 54 near Darien, GA which is about 20 miles north of Brunswick) where there was very wide shoulder. We were safe there with us parked ~50' from the roadway. I got it running again by fiddling with the distributor (problem persisted right through last year) when I found the wiring harness from the base of HEI distributor to cap was intermittent.
