Went to fire up the fridge today, would not light and when it did it cut out
immediately.

I found the problem. There is a small copper washer on the gas input line
that
goes to the gas orifice. It ruptured.
Anyone know of a source for that copper washer/gasket?

My temp fix will be using some Permatex Copper gasket as a sealer until I
find a replacement.

Thanks,

My local Autozone carries an assortment if copper washers in a box behind the counter. Some are flat and some are dished to seal on brass fittings.

Len and Pat Novak

My Norcold is a 3 way. Gas - Electric 120v ac - 12vdc. I like this frig a lot and have used
all three options over time. There is the right time to use them and not to use them. its
a learning curve.

It has been one of the best refrigerators for the RV that I have ever had.

Now for the shocker. I bought it as a replacement to a (other brand) back in the late 1980's.

Thats just a few years back I guess, lol.

Over time I have learned a few things.

First, they are not supposed to last this long. If your Norcold is over 10 years old, you need to look at the coils in back.
You can sort of look at them with a flashlight and mirror from the access panel.
Those coils are made of steel. They are subject to the weather, even though they are inside that refer pocket and with the
heat and cool of the weather and refer actions, the paint cracks, moisture gets in and rust starts.
Rust eating its way through the metal of the coil is what will let the amonia leak out and end that life span of that cooler
unit.

The other concern is the control switch for turning it on and turning on the edge heaters.
The switch that I speak of is located between the freezer and the refrigerator, between the doors smack dab in the middle
of the shelf. Its a nice looking mini rocker, and is a 2 pole double throw, as I recall.

Its placement was a mistake and causes problems down the road.
The refer will sweat in the summer and this special switch gets wet and will corrode. EVentually it will stop making contact
and you have to replace this expensive switch. I am on my 2nd and due for a third if I can find one.

The switch allows turning the refer on with or without the edge heaters on to keep the sweat off.

I have never had a problem with my eyebrow controls for this frig.

Getting back to those metal coils.... After about a 10 year run in my SOB RV I had removed this 3 way Norcold when The RV was scrapped,
I liked the Norcold and wanted to try to preserve it.

I inspected the metal tubes and found some surface rust so while it was out, I tried to sand the rust off and used POR15 to coat the surface
in an attempt to make the life of the frig longer.
Still running today, knock on wood. But metal is tough to save and her time will come.

When that day happens, she can be rebuilt with either an electric or another ammonia based cooling system, and maybe some added foam insulation
where ever I can stuff it inside.

If your Norcold is really OLDER THAN DIRT, you should really inspect those coils for rust. You may be near the time to replace the cooling
unit.

I have a 8336, 3 way. So far it has been bulletproof. We had a problem
several years ago as it would not cool. We took it out of the coach, pulled
the coils, turned them upside down and whacked them with a plastic hammer.
I ran just the coils and after that they work just fine. The unit is about
25 plus years old. I have the original manuals and bill of sale from the
PO.

I have never has a problem with the eyebrow unit. I have pulled it, cleaned
it and that is about all.

I have never used that rocker switch and it has been off since I bought the
coach about 10 years ago.

I was looking at an Atwood Refrigerator Model: HE-0601 helium if I could not
get this one running.

You can take that switch apart and clean up the terminals. Then put in some dielectric grease to keep out moisture and stop corrosion.
I did this to mine and the switch worked fine afterwards.

I would think if it gets serious enough to need to repair or replace the fridge,

It may be money saving to just replace the cooling unit. You can go with gas

or electric.

Another option is to look at the low power fridges. I think they are electric

are well insulated and have special motors for the freon compressor to use

very low power.

My last choice would be to replace like for like today.

just my thoughts

I wasn't aware that switch could be disassembled. We are talking about the mini rocker switch, right??

It appeared sealed when I pulled it. I'll have to pull it again and look closer...

Thanks for the thought.

A tiny broke gasket in the burner assembly wont stop me from fixing the
unit.

Update.

I could not find the part anywhere so I used Permatex Ultra Copper Gasket
sealer around the burner where the copper washer lives. I let it set
overnight and fired it off Thursday morning. It is still running fine. Not
bad for a 25+ year old fridge.
