Because inquiring minds want to know -

Summit Racing -

AAZ-55-21118H WATER PUMP NEW
Expected Arrival on 3/4/2019

That’s less definitive than “Will ship on 2/5”

I put it on this order because the other $80 part I bought was heavy, and this made it “Free Shipping"

I don’t think I’ll hold my breath.

Anyone actually see one of the puppies in the wild

Dolph,

If you mean see that pump?
That is what I put back when I finished the rebuild on my main engine.

You can't see it now, it is in the coach and it is cold out there.

My order got bumped too. I got one from Advance because they had one in
stock locally and according to them it's made by cardone but doesn't look
like the pictures of the cardone one. I figured I can return the advance
one if they actually ship it.

Yeah. Cardone makes them new. I have one in the box from whomever was the best deal. Adcvance, I think. Bought it a few months ago when Pryor researched them.

When I researched this a few weeks ago.....
- Summit showed 2/4 availability, but by phone did not know when they'll receive them to ship.
- Cardone is the only supplier of these, and does not manufacture them but rather buys them from someone. They did not know when they'd receive them to ship and suggested I call a dealer to see if they have one in stock.
- Advance, one of Cardone's dealers, told me via Customer Assistance that Carquest (now owned by Advance) sells this pump under part number #T3086 and that they take it out of the Cardone box and put it into a Carquest box.
- A local Carquest store found two in stock at their Portland warehouse and has ordered one for me. $44.98.
- I now have it in my hands. There are no part numbers stamped in the casting. It has a large impeller with an endplate.

Out of curiosity, I ordered the Advance version. It was $44, but I had a 25% off coupon making it $33, then a Speed Perks coupon that made it $13, shipped. I received confirmation that it shipped tonight. I will keep y’all posted, and post some pictures.

On a related note, a ‘78 coach engine would be Corporate Blue, correct? I will need to paint the pump.

These are the pumps with the roller bearings, right? I hope so—I found one
at a local Advance and just paid for it. Should have it in hand when I pick
it up later today. My current pump is new but a standard, not premium pump
and this one will go in the replacement cycle.

Rick, the giveaway is the part number. The roller bearing one's number has an H at the end for heavy duty. Number is the same otherwise. Without the H, you get ball bearings front and back.
NOTE - Some computer software treats these as identical, even though internally they aren't. Be careful, look for the H.

Okay, the pics are up at:

So how can we tell if it's the good roller bearing version?

Thanks,

The end of the shaft is stamped R637. The fan mounting flange has 1822318C laser etched on it. I just added a couple of pictures to the earlier album showing these markings.

According to Tom Pryor’s post on January 23, the “R” signifies roller bearings, so it may indeed be correct that it’s a reboxed version of the Cardone 55-21118H.

If someone has a Cardone version handy, could you please let us know if the shaft face at the fan side has similar markings?

Other identifying marks on this T3086 casting would be “A-02” cast into the face on one side, and a symbol like a spoked wheel with an “8” or “B” in the center on the other side (see photos).

8 B is date coding for the casting. Likely February 2018.

I didn’t get any hits for the rest of the numbers.

Allegedly, 3-7 for one in my hand.

Well guys, I went out to the (very cold) barn and retrieved my genuine Cardone 55-2118H pump which I got from Rock Auto a couple months ago. (Ordered by make and part number. Was back-ordered several months, but you can ask to be notified when available, so I got one when I could.) Box has Cardone's own label on it, UPC number is 0 82617 71854 7. BTW, for those who worry over such things, it is "made in china". Wink
Anyhoo, I'm afraid it doesn't look much like the pictures posted online. The heater/bypass hose fittings are pressed-in steel, and the impeller is closed-face and a full 4 1/4" diameter. The fan flange has nothing stamped on it, but does bear a sticker bearing "5521118H", "inspected by" "BH24169" "NEW", also one of those square ink-blots meant to be read by a smart phone (sorry, my phone's smart but I's not) and at right angles to the above, the long (serial?) number "201808025551030".
The end of the shaft is stamped "WP1938165" opposite the number "3". In the center is a grinding mark which appears to be etched with "CH2".

You guys shamed me enough to do the same thing.

I stopped by the airport tonight and found my new spare Cardone Select pump still sealed in a plastic wrapper. The whole thing was oiled so it should not rust outside of the wrapper. I did not have a camera with me so a verbal description is all you get. Mine matches almost exactly what Rick said. Some additional things are: there is a number stamped (NOT CAST) into the front casting going toward the radiator hose outlet. It is: S21118H 1612282. The impeller has 6 impellers covered with a 4.5" OD disk. The box says made new in China. With a red, black, and white Cardone Select label.

That is about all I have to add.

I recently bought the #T3086 Water Pump from CarQuest after speaking with the Advance Auto Parts factory rep, who said that CarQuest is selling the Cardone heavy duty pump under that part number.

The CarQuest pump has 6 impellers covered with a 4.5" OD disk and has the number WR1938165 stamped on the end of the shaft.

Matt Colie suggested that that number may indicate the bearing, so I searched and found a description here.... https://hkbearings.tradeindia.com/water-pump-bearing-2884590.html, and here... https://m.alibaba.com/product/60701177993/Auto-Bearing-koyo-W7R112B-Water-Pump.html...that confirm it is a roller/ball bearing.

This (mostly) agrees with Rick Staples report of a Cardone 55-2118H with WP1938165 stamped on the shaft. I was not able to find a bearing online with that number, and suspect that the 'P' was really an 'R' (they are small numbers and hard to read. I used my samsung android microscope)

So that's enough for me. Hopefully CQ still has them in stock for those who are waiting for Summit or other sources.

Advance apparently has multiple suppliers for that pump, as the T3086 I received was a very different pump. Check out some of the pictures at http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g7203-carquest-t3086-water-pump.html and note how the hose nipples on this unit are part of the casting instead of a pressed-in pipe. The one I received also had a smaller impeller & different bearings.

I might have mentioned this before, but, buyer beware. If you have a pump
that was giving you good service and failed due to age, and has all the
features you deem vitally important, (impeller, roller bearings, matching
gaskets, outlets, etc) remove it and take it with you to your parts store
of choice and match it up. Numbers lie, so does packaging. I bought 5 pumps
for a seminar at a rally, all with the same part number. They were all
different from each other. One was correct, 4 were not. Such is the state
of parts supplies.

A bit more than a year ago, a young friend from the car community (he’s helped me with my coach) went to work as a buyer at a national auto parts chain. The job was in Roanoke, VA (a bit of a move for him).

He has excellent skills, and his vehicles show it. He’s a real mechanic, a bit of a machinist, knows which end of the voltmeter to hold on to, and is well written and read. B.S.B.A, and a slew of certifications. Smart, resourceful, completely unafraid of asking questions when he does not know, and likable.

About a week after he transferred to the home office, he called and said “I’m in a bull pen in an old circuit city store with about 30 buyers. I think I’m the only one who can change my own oil. They looked at my micrometer and digital calipers with awe. Few of them had ever used them. Part number and price chasers, with no interest in quality”

This is one of the chains you probably have been to. Their CEO’s sole qualification to be at the helm is that he sold sugar water, and gives good powerpoint, and Starboard Value LP thinks he can improve the bottom line for a few quarters so they can bail out of their position.

He changed jobs shortly thereafter.

Such is the state of auto parts supply right now.

Sorry about being harsh, but it’s how I see it.
