Bob,
I use only Optima batteries in my "fleet". And the US Army does also. ( 'son
is a technical advisor to active duty US Army units on all mobile ground
equipment)
There was a time interval when I too was getting about three years on the
"redtops". I bought most of the batteries from Amazon during that time and I
managed to replace them just before the warranty expired. Amazon didn't
even ask for details on the failures - 'just promptly sent replacements. One
of the warranty replacements lasted 12 years. 'Just replaced it last June
(it was in my Alaska "summer" car that I leave in Alaska/Anchorage General
Aviation Airport).
It appeared that the premature failures were associated with Johnson
Controls' acquisition of Optima. They apparently "wised up" several years
after their acquisition and fixed/reversed any changes they made to the
products.

I bought an Optima red top in 1985. It finally died in 2010. So I started
buying them for everything in about 2008 I believe. Then I was lucky to get
3 years out of these later ones if I was lucky. there junk now. Bob
