While sitting waiting for the weather to improve I came across an interesting video on YouTube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTNJLEV8CG8

The guy who made the video said "I cut open and compare 5 popular oil filter brands and am horrified by the quality of one of them. Please share this with your friends so they will never buy this piece of garbage."

I feel better that I use WIX oil filters in my GMC.

Any comments?

The hot rod community has known this about Fram for years.

Order Wix online 12 at a time. Yes NAPA GOLD is made by and uses the same part number as Wix. Just drop the first digit of the Wix number.

Here is one online place:

Funny how this filter thing is...Until I got involve with this group, I used Fram filters exclusively, for over 40yrs, with never a single issue. Now the only reason I will buy one is to get the rubber "O" ring for the oil cooler adaptor. Now I use only Wix or Napa gold. Also no issues. Do make me wonder though.

I have been running different car-related mailing lists, forums, and Facebook groups for about 25 years. The old joke is that there are three topics that will generate polarizing, passionate arguments amongst the members:

1) Politics
2) Religion
3) Oil Filters

There is a combination of fact, opinion and faith involved with all three that makes each topic fairly volatile.

GMCnet has done well steering clear of 1 & 2, so hopefully we can navigate #3 peacefully as well. :-)

Dave,

I feel that you will be ammused.

In my time reading here, we have not had an oil filter war. Everybody here knows that Fram is junk. Everybody here knows that Wix makes the NAPA Gold filters and that they are about the best. Someone might slip in that Hastings (the same folks that make good piston rings) makes a good oil filter, and by the tests in our lab, they are. But they have never gotten into the mass marketing.

The only thing of real value that I might add here is that when I was bringing in lots of engine parts, it was fast and convenient to order Wix from Rockauto. They will never be on my best supplier list, but they are not likely to make the "supplier of last resort" position either. And as it is unlikely that anybody on this list will do a complete rebuild on his engine anytime soon, that leaves that consideration in the bottom of the stack.

Matt - looking out at the now positive temperatures

Amazing how good a sunny day with +2F feels as compared to the other day when it was -15.

I use whatever's on sale with the 'oil deal' at Advance... which is usually Purolator. Changing the oil and filter every 3K miles (or as much as 5 if I'm on the road continually) Probably isn't going to make too much difference in the filter's ability. I eschew Fram simply because friends have had one or three of them fail physically. Removing the pieces of a blown filter beside the highway is a chore I'd rather skip.

I've spent a fair amount of time in Fords. I prefer Mopar, all esle being equal. But nobody will sell a 60s Mopar pickup for any reasonable price, so I'min a Ranger for hauling.
