I have both axles out. I cut off the damaged boot.
How do I get the new boot on?
Does the CV joint come off?
Thanks again for any help.

Yes.
In all that grease is a snap ring, and you need to force it open. You might be able to use reverse needle nose, but if not a number of different companies make a tool for it.
Then you can slide the CV off (I’m assuming outer).

When we did my first one at your place (mine is a 1-Ton, so a bit different?) - I recall us having issues finding that clip buried in the grease! But it’s there! Once the clip is released - it just slides out…
See figure 1 on page 3B-2 of the 1975 & 1976 Maintenance Manual for an exploded diagram.

I do have a set of snap ring pliers that work both ways.
Rob, what did we use when we did yours?
DJ
Harry,
It isn't a snap ring with round holes. It is a snapring with two straight ears and they stick into a depression in the center spider. If they are changeable point snapring pliers, you may want to grind flats on the other ends of a pair of tips. When you spread the ring, the shaft slides right out and the ring stay with the CV joint.
To reassemble, just push the shaft in.
You should be able to get the grease off your body in about a week.

I recall just using a set of needle-nose pliers to squeeze the ends of the clip together (but I think the clip is in a slightly different position compared to a stock CV). But I also recall banging my head against it again when I did the other side a 18 months or two years later!
The trick was to clear away some of the grease! Once I could see what was going on - it was a deja vu moment...
