[GMCnet] How much oil is truely in the front of oil pan? [message #336699]

It seems to come up that it's a quart. Anyone really confirmed that to be true? I think that's high. I'm GUESSING that it's more like a pint. Bob Dunahugh

Somewhere in the past, someone in the GMC community installed a second
drain plug in the front of a motorhome pan, reason being that all the oil
could then be drained. If my memory serves, the amount drained was between
a pint and a quart. Huge discussion followed. No decision was reached if I
remember correctly.

It depands.
If you add oil it goes there till it waterfalls to the rear
If you start the engine that will be slung by the crank and very little will be up there.
Your dipstick will now read more.

Dick Patterson of Springfield at an engine semiar stated that in his test
on a pan (455), he varified 1 quart.
I have our guys raise the front in hopes to decrease the amount of oil up
front.
I feel it is more important tochange oil frequently.

I've pulled 2 engines that I was extremely careful to not tip. During removal. Did pull the drain plug prior to removal. Then pulled the oil pan off to see how much oil that was at the front of the oil pan. Wasn't more then a fourth to a third of a pint. And nowhere near over flowing that front area. During driving. That recessed area is very close to the crank. So I think the high winds from the rotating crankshaft. Keep the oil out all the time. Then when the engine is stopped. Then oil flows down from above into the front recessed area. That front part is closer then some windage trays I've seen, or built. Bob Dunahugh

All,

Have you reviewed Ken’s photo’s on the 455 Oil Pan Capacity? It does show that you could have almost a quart of oil in the front of the pan. I have an additional drain plug in the front of my oil pan. I admit that I have not measured the volume that comes out the plug in past oil changes, but I am going to change the oil and filter in the next week and will measure the amount that is drained out.

Some time ago I measured 3/4 Quart in the front of my oil pan with it level, this may vary.

The owners manual specification on oil capacity is 6 quarts, so if the information above says that there is possibility of 1 quart left in the upper pan do you just add 5 quart ????
If you add 6 quarts (which I normally do) per my oil change I actually have to much oil.
Any thought???

Five is all I put in mine and it brings it right to the full line on the dipstick.

Mine is a '73 and when I put in 6 quarts, it does come up to the full mark, but that top quart is gone in 400+ miles. When left at add, I could go another 1500 before I was an half down.
