Yesterday while at the kitchen table. I asked Linda if she could find the company phone number for Master Tow. She had her lap top on. And in front of her. As I wanted to find out what the toe in spec was for our tow dolly. Before Linda found it. And in within about 30 seconds. Our 5 year old grand daughter that was standing there with her I pad. Turned the pad for me to see. And said. I think the number your looking for. In service. Is in the lower left corner. Shell I call them for you grandpa? REALLY? I need to work on my computer skills. I had to buy a 'smart phone' for a new service. Took my daughter maybe 30 minutes to setr it up, fix my F - ups and load the info from my flip phone. After I'd fooled with it for a couple of weeks. I'll note, she started out at age 3 on a Commodore PET.

My son and I built a microcomputer in '76, while he was still in high
school; then, he worked for me in my computer business from '82 to '94,
when I re-retired.
When the first grandson finally arrived, he had his own computer, at floor
level, before he could walk. :-) He's now at GA Tech "studying"
information technology. After having built a 3-D printer while
home-schooled at, and working in, his Dad's computer store, I'm not sure
just what they're teaching him.
The younger grandson has had just as much computer exposure and is still
working in the computer store while studying biology at the local college.
Don't know how he may merge the two. :-)
And here I had to punch cards when I was in college!

I had a similar experience. Technology is moving so fast and my problem is I will move ahead with the tech if it interests me. Otherwise I am happy to just stay at the level I am at.
My computer experience starts in the 70's. I bought the IBM pc, not knowing a thing about it. By the time windows come to the computing scene, I was able to program games and such in MSDOS basica. I was actually pretty good. Advancing to the interweb I got to experience viral attacks and complete computer lock ups. I had to learn how to get around this and to combat future attacks. I learned a lot about backups at this time. And I did beat the viral attacks eventually. today I am running several operating systems, WinXP, Win7, Win8.1, ubuntu and LINUX. I favor my desk tops but have a Lenovo Ideapad Yoga as well as a Net book.
So I can get into it if it interests me.
I bought an IPAD some years back. I wanted to try something other than a lap top at the time. It was interesting but I felt it didn't have the capacities that I wanted so it became my alarm clock. Worked very well for that.
A young neighbor lad came by and saw it. In 5 minutes he had added apps and could make the thing do all sorts of things. I use it now and then but prefer the desk top over all my toys.
THEN THE CELL PHONE...
My interest in a Cell Phone is to call out and receive calls. I don't really text. My old Cell phone was a flip phone. I have had several of these. My first one broke the hinge, of course the way the phone companies work, they buy a block of phones, sell them and move to the next newer more techie phones. So I could not replace the phone like for like. They gave me a great deal on an APPLE I5c green... It had big number buttons for my big fingers so I liked it.
Remember, I only use a cell phone for calls and maybe texting.
I lost the password and wanted to add an app for my Chevy VOLT so I had to call APPLE for help. The were agast when they asked me to do the simplest thing and go on the internet......WELL, I'd never done it before... My response was - OK, how do I do that? There was silence.... then he said I needed to go to a class to learn how to use the phone at the phone company store... lol... Yeah I know pretty basic but I barely use the apps that are on the phone and because I didn't plan to use it for interweb, only purchased the minimum service, about 2 gig. Just don't need it.
I only recently started to use this I5c for storing music because it is connected thru bluetooth to the Chevy VOLT entertainment system and it plays the music from the I5c I phone. Just like an Ipod. I just recently was given an Ipod and began using it to play music at home. I used the MiniDisc rather than a the Ipod since the method for saving songs was better on the MD.
Last thought, I was speaking with some folks I know up North. We were talking and the topic turned to the IPADs where she mentioned that her Grand daughters entire life if run from her IPAD. SHE DOES EVERYTHING from that device. I have no idea how she may back it up but from how this lady was talking, if that IPAD should ever stop working, she would be in a rough place.
Lastly, My neighbors grandson was in High school. we were talking and he mentions how he BUILDS his own computers and routinely tears his dads computer, that his dad uses for work, apart and upgrades. At the time, I more or less just used computers for their programs and interweb and had not had my war with the interweb virals yet. Little did I know I was soon to learn. I was amazed that he could tear them down like that, which is something that I would learn and can do easily today. I felt, and still do, that this young man was rather advanced in this area of computers and it would be interesting to see where his intellect will take him as computer technology moves on.
