Checking your skill level. I've bought 4 GMC's. First one we paid good money for. 78 Royale. 13 years, 54,000 miles, and 38 states. No problem till we didn't get the frig fire recall. 2 was a 78 Royale barn fined 5 years ago. Complete. Needed mostly drivetrain work. Got it in good order. Sold it to a close friend. He's had zero issues as to mechanicals. Very nice GMC. He's at around $26,000 in it now. 3 was another 78 Royale. This one got super personal. Took EVERYTHING apart. Then I built a GMC from scratch between Nov of 15 to Apl of 16. $41,000 in parts. With no labor cost. Just me. Got about 14,000 miles on it now. It's PERFECT for our needs. 4 is a 73 Canyonland to build, and sell. Just about done to sell at the GMCMI rally this Sept in Amana Iowa. I got it with a gutted interior. But It came with everything that was taken out included. It now has all new cushions/seats, frig, cooktop, counter top, flooring, roof A/C, headliner, paneling, recessed LED lighting in ceiling, and a hole lot more. Working on mechanicals now. It's developing into a very nice GMC for $21,000. For me. I've got the tools/knowledge/shop to do this. But I would never buy a gutted GMC without the interior components. I know someone that bought one gutted. But he owns a cabinet building company. And it's coming out PERFECT. Just an FYI. Good luck. Bob Dunahugh Cedar Rapids Iowa.

Look at Bob's numbers. That's for a skilled mechanic (Bob) working for nothing. If you pay it done, at least double the parts cost in labor. So, the GMC mantra is, three options.
1. Be a shade-tree or better mechanic and buy parts as needed.
2. Be well - to - do and buy it done to your satisfaction.
3. Go broke and end up with a basket case for someone else.
I recommend either #1 or #2. There'sa plenty of expert advice here to do it yourself.
