Highs been have been in the 90's or high 80s for days. On top of that my home AC quit so I have been outside in the sun working on it for days. I do not understand why things always break on me. This system is only 35 years old and it broke twice in the past week. I wish I knew this when I bought it and I would have bought and installed a different brand.
First thing that happened is 240 volt power cable inside Seal-tite armored / waterproof sheath between the house and compressor the burned completely in half. After chasing down and rebuilding with some 10 gauge wire and new Sealtite, I redesigned the attachment and installed the new wire with new Sealtite. It is almost in possible to find real plastic covered steel seal-tite these days. I completed that job on Sunday morning and enjoyed AC for about 4 hours
Then it got warm again. This time the evaporator/ compressor fan quit. In trying to remove the fan connections I managed to destroy the rusted fan and compressor starting capacitor. So where to get one on Sunday. Answer nowhere. So on Monday the best I could find was to order one for Thursday delivery. That was unacceptable. I finally found a place that had two separate capacitors of the correct value in stock. I chased that down after 70 mile round trip and decided to wait until it cooled off the next morning to install them.
Next morning guess what? still no motor function. So off it came and sure enough I found that one of the windings was open. I checked of several HVAC supply places and no one had this GE unit any more. I finally found a Dayton brand one from W W Grainger that could be made to work with some minor modifications and wiring changes. I chased that one down (another 70 miles or so round trip) and waited for cooler temps this morning. Mean time I could not get the fan blades off of the old motor. So I had to take another 25 mile round trip ride to use the hydraulic press at the airport.
At 5:30 AM at a cool 79 degrees I started installing this new assembly. I finished about 9:00 AM just as it started getting hot again. I'm now enjoying temperate inside weather. I took a drive to Sam's Club this afternoon and it was 97-98 o9utside during that trip today.
I think I should move to Georgia. Colonel Ken keeps telling me it is nice down there. It is only suppose to be 90 here tomorrow (July 4) and Thursday. At least my AC is working.

My GMC was an excellent hiding spot during hurricanes. In Katrina, I simply walked outside, fired up Mister Onan and had TV, A/C, frig and hot water. Power was down for the day. Provided power to my frig in house with power cord.
Currently, coach is ready tp provide same services for this Hurricane season.

I keep trying to educate you:
1. Move to a better climate.

Not like Texas, Ken... I'd kill for some high 80s/90s weather right now... as I'm sure someone in Phoenix would kill for some of the low hundreds we've been having in Texas...

The problem here is when it gets that hot, the wind is always out of the south and it blows all of that gulf moisture up here along with the high temp. So the humidity goes to over 90% along with the high heat. It is only 87% right now at 8AM.
I do not care what Colonel Kens tells me, this time of year I usually try to head north. Usually ND, Manitoba, Montana, or Alberta. I wanted to go farther north this year but I think I have too many things broken around here to be gone that long.
Have a good July 4th. AC is still working here. Maybe it will last another 35 years.
When I was a kid we did not have AC. I can remember my mother refusing to let us go outside and play when it was over 100. 100 never seemed to bother us then. We use to constantly check the thermometer and when it said 99 we were gone. I guess it was because no one ever told us about global warming back then.

Ken,
Yep it's hotter than Hades here in Houston, 95 F + and 90% humidity. I'm only good for about 4-5 hours before I'm exhausted.
The good news is the guy that owns the storage facility where I keep my toys has a unit (18' x 40') that's air conditioned and
that's where I'm currently building the engine for my 1969 VW.
After that I'm finally going to build the Patterson 455 you brought down from Canada to the Shawnee GMCMI Convention in 2012!
Since the Kingsley has a Caddy 500 in it I'll be selling the 455.

Gee, scheduled to have a high temp here of 77° with a relative humidity of
3%. Don't know if we can stand it. Hasn't rained since the 1st week of

In my 30's I was based in Sydney and was running 5 miles a day to the post office near work at lunch to get my mail.
I'd travel to Singapore to cover Singapore Airlines and the Boeing Rep and I would do the same at lunch, the Singaporeans thought we

My home AC developed a non-findable leak at the 17 year point. $12,000 later provided a more efficient air AND heating unit and improved air distribution. Unheard of for an AC system to last 35 years. Kwitcha bitchin! Temps here in OKC running mid to high 90s with similar humidities!

Here in Seward, Alaska, it reached 84 yesterday and the locals are talking
about the end of the world. The Mountain Marathon organizers are expecting
heat exhaustion in addition to the usual broken bones and acres of skin
removal.
The RV Park is jammed—severe case of KOA Hell. Not aGMC in sight
(obligGMCcontent).
No air-conditioning in our hotel, which would be fine if the windows opened
enough to do any good.

A now deceased friend set up a custom still followed by his widow and to which I subscribe. After a string of disasters on the Fourth (his, not mine) the Stay Home edict was passed and has worked well. I may or may not attend a barbecue this afternoon, that will be the extent of my travels. Beyond that I will be home before fireworks, because the dogs don't like them.
We can pretty much see the Braselton ones from the backyard. I spent the time correcting potential leaks on the GMC today.

I was thinking more like Ft. St. John or Whitehorse. Their weather ought to be in the 70's this time of year. I have friends I could visit. A return trip through Glacier would also be nice.

Rick,
Lucky you, being in Sewart on the 4th! That race is a "must see"! When we
were there in 2000 we parked in the lot downtown, with the front bumper
"hanging over the water". :-)
Fact is, we didn't even know about the race until we parked there. Talk
about numb travelers!
