I have one and no name he was right. They were only on GMCs first delivered to California. The originals were not attached to the
floor but were attached directly to the exhaust pipe on about a 1" stand off. I re-did the standoffs on mine about 10 years ago.

I fabricated heat shields out of some galvanized stovepipe. Flattened and bent to an ell shape to cover above the exhaust and vertically between pipe and gas tank. Easily mounted to exhaust pipe by drilling holes in the shield to align with the u-bolts of a couple muffler clamps. Easy one day project (I'm slow), seems to keep tanks cooler.

When I installed a 3 inch exhaust on the 77, the heat shield mountings no longer fit. I made new ones, a little bit longer, so they fit between the crossmembers, bent a 90 degree tab on each end and bolted them to the crossmember. The stretch had ones much like that in it when we got it.
