I'm thinking of carrying a spare alternator.since my son and daughter each
had their alternator stop working last week. ( as "they" say things goes in
threes ). I have no idea if I currently have an 80 or 100 amp alternator.
If I buy a 100 amp as a spare is it a problem if I currently am running a
80 amp?

I replaced my original 80 amp alternator with an Autolite 7157 100 amp alternator many years ago.
I had no problems with the existing wiring but some have suggested replacing the wire from the alternator that goes to the center terminal of the isolator with a heavier gauge wire.
Normally you will not draw anywhere near 80 or 100 amps. I suppose if your battery is completely dead you might have a large draw momentarily but usually it will never draw that much.
I feel tht it will give better charging at idle or slow RPM.

The 100 amp looks identical to the 80 amp and it will bolt right in place.
I have had it replaced by Advanced Auto under their lifetime warranty (I originally bought it from Kragen which was bought out by Checker which was bought out by Advance.
I have had it replaced free about 3 times over the years.

I carry very little extra parts as I end up needig to carry display parts
for Convention and Ralles.
I do make sure that my generator works to back up the alternator when it
fails. One time the belt broke on the alternator so I used the Aux battery
till it got low then fired up my generator and traveled for the remainder
of the day till we stopped for the night then got a new belt .
Carrying belts are fine, but when they become 5years old, throw them away
like the tires.
I always carry fuel filters and ignition module and coil.
Oh.Spare tireis also a must in my book.

Bill,

That shouldn't be a problem.

I'd suggest you install a pulley on your spare and carry a spare belt.

I recommend getting a rebuilt alternator from your “none-good” rebuilder.
Since I installed 3 new ones till I got one that worked
Carry the old one for a spare
