Just so there is no confusion, On the GMC's, we have a single belt for the
alternator and another belt that goes to the water pump-AC compressor. How
do I know? I changed out about a dozen alternator belts going 400 miles
before I thought it out. Started and ran the generator to keep the truck
battery charged. The alternator belts were failing because the alternator
support arm had been left off after a repair. Oh for a nail, a shoe, a
horse, a battle and then the war.

By the way, I could change out that belt in less than 3 minutes and be back
on the road. LOL.

On my royale the top alternator strut had been omitted by a prior tech as
well. Could not make the belt stop squealing prior to building a
replacement out of 1/2” .065 wall steel round tube. No further issues after
that.

And there are owners out there who have no choice but to trust their
mechanic. Perhaps we should be naming names of where sloppy work took
place? How can a so called mechanic not notice an extra bolt or a bracket
when he has finished a job.

Of course if he does, the part is 'buried' and the machine buttoned up and
taken out to the parking lot. Even here in NS customers are not permitted
to enter the work area and frequently one is unable to view the activity
taking place on ones car or GMC.

A good deal for the insurance companies because how do you prove that the
ruined engine for example, was the fault of a particular shop ?

I like to do my own work...then I know the 'donkey' who screwed up and can
act accordingly !

I think finding anyone nearby who is willing to work on these things is a
pretty tall order. I’ve worked in the engine bay on a few GMC mh and it
just plain sucks. The only upside is that the refrigerator is nearby 😜.
Add to that obsolete parts and the footprint a GMC MH occupies and it’s an
uphill battle for sure.

Mike,

I also do all my own work, not just on the GMC but on essentially everything I can.

It's not just about saving money on the labor but also trying to find people who fix things PROPERLY seems impossible these days.
