Hope this isn't a silly question, but I've been thinking of wrapping the exhaust pipes and mufflers with some of the insulating products (header wraps, muffler shields, etc)found on the performance equipment sites. Thinking this might reduce the amount of heat delivered back to the gas tanks. (I already added heat shields between the tanks and the tailpipe similar to those used on California coaches. Seem to help a bit.) Just wondering if anyone has tried this approach, and what your results were.

header wrap tends to make headers more bridle and they crack alot after a while. not sure how it would do in mufflers since they dont get quite as hot.

I have seen this done on 4 wheel drives (in magazines) where the exhaust system is in REALLY close proximity to drivetrain components, but I would think it might promote corrosion of your pipes and mufflers, unless they are Stainless Steel.

It is common to wrap exhaust systems on airplanes and helicopters but only on daily fliers. Aircraft exhaust systems run much, much hotter but wrapped ones still corrode, rust, deteriorate if not flown daily.

I would not recommend it on a once a week or less used vehicle.

I agree with Fred.
Wrapping the exaust will work, but it will cost you later as the pipe will
oxidize quickly.
Coat the tanks with heat reflective paint and pull the selector valve and
line to outside of the frame where it is cooler and mount an large aux.
fuel filteer and pump.
Go to our web site and see how we assemble our kit.
Also call and we can discuss . Oh, you never need to purchase anything.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not worried about embrittleing my headers as I run cast iron manifolds. Less noise, less heat, and less crowding in the engine room. Some day in the future when a total engine rebuild becomes necessary, I may have the exhaust ports in the heads separated by welding and resurfacing, but until then I don't think headers would do all that much good. And yes, I am slightly concerned about accelerating rust under any exhaust wrap, which is one reason I asked if anyone had tried it, but I guess no one has. It's so dry here in Colorado, I'm still running the exhaust system that was in the Dancing Bear when I bought it over 20 years ago. Growing up in New England, where mufflers lasted 3-4 years if you were lucky, I willing to gamble on rust.
Finally, thanks for the usual good advice, JimK. Wish I'd thought of moving the fuel lines and selector valve outside the frame before I dropped the tanks and completely replumbed the system last year. Next time I'll follow your plan (or something like it). And yes, I have purchased many things from Applied GMC, and will in the future. Thank you, Jim,, for all you do to keep our classics running.

what I was trying to get across is that it may weaken the mufflers too just like it is notorious for with headers and why it voids warranties by most header manufacturers.

it will increase the muffler temperatures a quite a bit and they will probably self destruct much sooner than they would without the wrapping.
