Time to change the oil and filter. The owners manual says 6 quarts with a
oil and filter change on my 403 CID. But does a quart "stay behind" in the
pan thus should I add only 5 quarts ? Not sure that i trust the dip stick.

Somewhere I think it was Rob M researched and posted pics. The front of pan holds under 1 quart IIRC. Someone may post link but not sure if same for 403.

On my 403 I always add 5.5 quarts when doing a filter and oil change, and it comes out perfect. It's about 3/4 of the way in to the "safe" zone on the dipstick. FWIW.
