A great rally and considerable work accomplished. Lots of friends, old and new, and greasy hands and delicious meals. And continual coffee.

The down side - We're told this is the last one. So we need to find another spot. And everyone who's ever made Bean Station should send the Samsels a Thank You note for 129 years of hospitality.

Rob Mueller was laid low by what turned out to be a hernia that the Morristown ER folks managed to reduce. Last word we got as a group - he's to head for Houston for whatever further treatment is needed.

We were all disappointed. But it was a great run, and my only regret is
that I didn’t start attending it sooner. The bull session the garage and
the card games in the meeting room lasted much later than usual Saturday
night—nobody really wanted them to end.

I’m sure the Dixielanders will find a way to have a work rally in the
future, but it will take some commitment from younger folks (plus the right
venue) to make it possible.

Which leads me to two points:

1. When a good thing is available, participate and support it.

2. When a good thing is not available, pitch in to replace it.

What makes owning a GMC great is the connection with other GMC owners. It’s
easy for younger owners—kids still in the house, still working, family
responsibilities, independent and hungry for solitude—to go their own way.
But that is not the best way to own a GMC. Without the community, it will
die. It’s the community that keeps the necessary cottage industry and
mutual support alive. But that community justifies itself. Eventually,
those who attend regularly become friends, and rallies are no longer the
alternative to a vacation, they become the best kind of vacation.

So, join clubs. Attend rallies. Make friends. Help make things happen.
Let’s find a way to make a new Bean Station.

I felt very sad as I left on Sunday. I stayed around and was one of the last few to leave. I knew some of the people I would never see again. I was one of the Yankees that tried to attend every year. It is 500 miles one way for me. I started making the trip on 25E back when it was a twisted 2 lane road.

Marti and Al always treated me like gold and it was always what can I do for you. As I said good by to Al and then Marti om Sunday, Marti piped up and said "did you have breakfast?" What can I make for you? Jeanie Slaton then did the same. This was at 11 AM Sunday. I refused so Marti and Jeane Slaton me two ham and cheese sandwiches to go so I would have something to eat along he way. That is Marti, Al, and all of the Dixie Landers.

I will miss them all. Yes, I'll still see a few of them at other rallys, but many were people I only saw at Bean Station.

A big thank you to Al and Marti, and also to all of the Dixielanders.

I have the dubious distinction of being the last one out of the Bean Station rallies. I was all set to leave (had my coach next to the barn) Sunday afternoon and went in to say goodbye. Marti (probably sensing that I really didn't want to leave) suggested that is was too late to hit the road and that I should stay another night. I agreed and as it turned out it was a good thing.

I went out and took the coach back to the hill and walked back to the barn. During my walk I called home. My wife asked me how Rob from Australia was doing and as I was answering her, I heard Rob's distinctive voice. He and John Sharp were back to say their good byes. That was a good sight!

We ended up staying for leftovers and watched American Idol together.

I finally rolled out of Bean Station Monday morning.

Bean Station has been a big part of my spring times for the past 4 years. Thanks Marti & Al for all the memories!

Yes, Sunday was truly a sad day seeing Bean Station maybe for the last time.
I have many fond memories of some great times and people there. Like Marty
taking us in for the first time on what was to be an overnight stop on our way
home from an Eastern States rally in Gulf Shores, AL., and ended up turning
into 4 days and nights plus wonderful friendships. I spent one BS rally
(during one of the toughest times in my life) making plumbing repairs to the
grounds just to keep me busy and not have time to sit down and feel sorry
for myself. I swear that when everything was fixed, Al and Marty went out and
broke some more just to keep me busy. A great coupe. How about target shooting
up the hill with Al using golf balls and pitching wedges? As you can see, for me
it meant more to me than working on the GMC, though there has been my share of
that too. Oh, and Bean Station was where Ada and I spent our honeymoon 6 years ago
with 120 of our closest friends.

Al, Marty and the rest of the Dixielanders, thanks for allowing us to to go along on
the ride.

G'day,

I'm back in Houston and doing OK.

Years ago after Helen and I retired to Sydney my GP sent me to a surgeon when I developed an ache in my groin to the left of my
testicles. He diagnosed it as an inguinal hernia which isn't apparent as a lump on the surface of your abdomen:

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/inguinal-hernia/symptoms-causes/syc-20351547

I had some scans done and the surgeon told me that unless the intestines popped out I could leave it be and that 80% of men have
hernias that they don't even know about so I didn't have it repaired.

At Bean Station the intestines decided it was time to pop out and get strangulated. The hospital did a great job and had me
diagnosed quickly. They called in a surgeon to fix the hernia but when he got there he poked around and noted that he couldn't feel
it. I noted that before he poked around the ER doctor had done so. The surgeon noted that the ER doctor probably popped the
intestines back in negating the need for emergency surgery. He noted I could head back to Houston and follow up on treatment there.
When I mentioned that I lived in Sydney he noted that as long as the intestines didn't keep popping out I could postpone surgery
until I get back to Sydney. He showed me how to pop the intestines back in, told me I could eat a regular diet; and not to lift more
that 20 lbs so that's what I'm going to do.

Rob M.

Thanks for the update, Rob. Wherever we go next you get to bleed my brakes.

And it may be the end of the rallies but it's far from the end of the Samsels. I shall, and I charge anyone who's ever been there - If you get within fifty miles of Bean Station, drive over, and tell Al and Marti thank you for all the years and fellowship. Back here in the hills we call folks like the Samsels 'Good People.'

nb I left my coach there till next week to attend a show in Gray. Al's comment 'How ever long you need.'

Rob,

While you were at the hospital, I packed up your brake bleeder and put it in the white box that had your name on it. I taped it up and left it there for you. I hope I found everything that belonged with it. When I returned Sunday that box was gone so I assume you or John picked it up.

Thanks a bunch for the update. You really had us all worried. Glad to

Ken,

I'm taking it easy for a few days as my guts are still a bit tender. I'll follow up with a doctor here in Houston hoping I can postpone the repair until I get back to Sydney, HOWEVER, I'm not taking any chances to do that!
