What exactly does the button next to my start/stop button on my Onan
interior panel do? I believe it is a primer button but I don't know
exactly how it functions nor how to use it. Am I supposed to hold it the
entire time I crank the engine or hold it for X seconds and then crank?
I checked my manuals but didn't see anything on this button. My manual
just shows the start/stop button and an hour meter and the Onan
maintenance manual doesn't mention it or I missed it.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Mark--those buttons were not original equipment, but added by many owners. It is a primer button and really works well. You should push and hold it for 15 seconds or so before starting the Onan after it has been sitting for much more than a day.It back feeds 12V to the fuel pump. On mine I can hear the fuel pump come on, and when it quiets down, that means it has built up to pressure. Then I start the Onan and it fires right up.

Hi Mark,

It's probably a prime button the PO added, if it still works it's a good
idea.
Have someone press the button while you have the Onan pulled out and are
listening for the fuel pump near the carburetor.
If all is well the pump should make a rapid clicking sound and then slow
when the fuel bowl is full. (assuming it was empty to begin with, after
sitting for days or more)
Probably 5 or 10 seconds would be good for priming.
Since the pump is activated during starting, it would be redundant to use
the button while starting.
I need to add a button, I hate having to crank the Onan for so long when it
has sat for weeks without use.

The small red button on the panel is an after market circuit to allow the fuel pump to fill the bowl on the carburator. I hold my button down for about 5 seconds and let the pump fill the bowl then start the generator. The bowl tends to dry out when not used every day and the small button really helps. For a circuit diagram contact jim Bounds web site and you will see the circuit

Open the side door, listen closely while pushing the button. Or, stand
back by the Onan while someone else pushes the button. You should
hear the fuel pump clicking. If not, you may have just dumped your
holding tanks.

To All -

Has anyone heard of a Propane Conversion Kit for the Onans? I figured it
would make sense if we all carry LP anyway. Just a thought.

mine has been done this way, I have NOT reversed engineered this to
see what was done ( to busy tring to get the motorhome running). I am
dropping the tanks in a few weeks and i will see if the gentelman
helping me could take a look ( he is a far better mechanic than I) he
would be better at helping me figure it out

on that note, it runs far quieter than others parked near me, also my
oil and spark plugs dont seem to get very dirty at all. it starts and
runs everytime
I will post some pics when i take a look.

Brian,

It's not difficult to convert an Onan to LPG; I'm sure there's at least one
photo album showing someone's conversion.

But, frankly, it makes little sense to do it. From personal experience, and
Onan specs on models for which they offer gasoline and LPG options, they
burn more LPG than gasoline, and their outputs are derated about 10%. Even
a Coachmen-fitted GMC only has a 19.3g LPG tank -- that won't last long if
it's feeding an Onan too.

There are also potential high altitude and low temperature operation
problems with LPG-fueled generators.

We carry more gasoline than LPG, so why not continue to use it? Especially
since all the LPG I've bought for the past couple of years has been even
more expensive than gasoline.
