Hello all ,
just got the GMC out of storage and noticed the temp gauge not coming up.
is there a way to test the water temp sender to see if it is working?
or a way to test the gauge?
my gauge ( not original ) comes up off of the low of 90 but only up to 100. so it is moving slightly.
thanks joe

Dont know of a good way to test that is accurate and reliable, but I would spring for a sender from Napa

Napa TS6469.

I forget the calibration but its better than the stock sender. If I recall the OEM sender when at Normal was a bit hot.

Temperature Sender for GMC Motorhome

This may be old news for most, but doesn't hurt to be told.

With the original temperature sender on all GMC Motorhome engines, the actual coolant temperature will be:

225 degrees at 1/4, 250 degrees at 1/2, 270 degrees at 3/4, and 280 degrees at H.

This has caused a lot of engine damage when engines start to overheat. Go to NAPA, buy and install a TS-6469 sender and the actual coolant temperature will be:

180 degrees at 1/4, 215 degrees at 1/2, 240 degrees at 3/4, and
255 degrees at H.

Since the standard pressure cap raises antifreeze solution boiling point to 250 degrees, this change will enable much more accurate readings. I don't know why they did this but it is a serious problem. Info is from GMC Motorhome News published by Cinnabar, Dec. '95 issue. I did this and it agrees exactly with my VIP digital readout.

NAPA guy told me to ground the wire from the gauge with key on and gauge should go up if it is working, It did so it's a bad sender.
Thanks again

GMC senders use a 0 - 90 ohm range. A simple multimeter could test for that. The Napa sender is the solution. Less than $10, last time I chased one.

Before I went blaming the sender I would suspect the thermostat. I would still replace the sender to get the better range, but I suspect the thermostat is your issue.

Get a laser temp gun, around $30.
This is a great tool to have to see what is happening.
This tool has helped to shown us what is happening.

You might want to check the connnections at the sender. Since its been sitting, it may have corroded, which will definitely change the resistance.
