Hello All, I'm looking to add a BBQ mount to the rear of the GMC.

I have looked at the Hitch mount varieties and prefer not to go this way.

Looking at the rear of the coach I was wondering how to utilize the ladder as an option.

I have researched various ideas but I haven't seen anything that uses the ladder for a BBQ except as a temporary mount while cooking. A mount that will allow for traveling as well as BBQ'ing seems more efficient.

I have seen boat application style mounts but they don't look like they would hold up to a long trip.

Is anybody using the ladder for this and if so show it off?

Thanks,
Mike

Looking forward to others suggestions. my weber Q is always a headache, and I usually haul it in the towd now.

Mike, my only recommendation is to NOT use the ladder for this application. I know some people put Bikes and chairs hanging off the ladder, but my experience having the kid's bikes on the ladder was the mounting to the coach was not strong enough, and the vibration/bouncing pulled the ladder mounts off. On my coach, it actually was not the screws that pulled out, but the SMC cracked around and pulled loose, so I had to do some major body repair.

My other concern on the ladder, from when I did have the kids bike's hanging on it, was that it made the ladder not usable. So any BBQ mount you make, it should be done in a way you can still climb up the ladder if needed without killing yourself trying to climb over a bbq.

I have seen a few nice setups that come off the frame.

Hi Jon, thanks for your suggestion as well as the links.

I thought the ladder might be iffy for the same reasons you indicate, however, in reading the product details I assumed if a bike carrier can handle 50+ pounds a 25 pound BBQ should be less stressful on the mounting points.

You don't realize just how much vibration and bouncing around the coach experiences back there, especially when you're sitting in a cushy seat.

Both the links show examples of good ideas, my coach has a cover which makes it a bit more challenging but not impossible.

Thanks again,
Mike

If you want to mount a small grill this worked out well for us. When traveling it swings behind the GMC out of the way. To use just swing it around and open. The awning keeps you dry in the rain.

I don't think I'd want the heat of a BBQ grill that close to the skin of my coach!

Thanks Jim, another good idea, not sure I can "swing" it due to my existing bumper cover, so I need to find another way around it.

Thanks Mac, I considered the heat issue and would like to create something (if it doesn't already exist) that allows the BBQ to be pulled away from the mount similar to the retracting drawers of your kitchen cabinet.

I also considered the spare tire as a possible mounting point.

Thanks again,
Mike

If you can fabricate, design a mount that uses the spare tire rack as a basis for an angle iron rack for your BBQ. Should not be too difficult. I have seen this idea used for bike racks and antenna mounts.
Just free thinking along this line.
I agree not to use the ladder.

I made a bracket from 2 x2" aluminum angle to hang on the rear chrome bumper. 2 more shorter pieces on top with captive wing nuts clamp it in place. I lined the inside surfaces with McMaster 2" super adhesive loop velcro so it cannot scratch as I have new bumper halves in back. Works great. This is for the RVQ that did not work due to defective regulator. Put on a new larger regulator and works great.

G'day,

I made a mount for a BBQ that attached to the rear bumper but after standing in the rain BBQing I said bugger this!

I then purchased one of these:

I screwed the mounting strip for the BBQ to the side of Double Trouble just above the LPG door. I had to make some standoffs for the
bottom of the mounting bracket / stand because the body is curved.

I was then able to BBQ under the awning and not get wet, PLUS when Helen and I had guests I could talk to them while I cooked!

It's been in use for years!

PS - I bought mine while it was on sale and didn't pay anywhere near $187!

Thanks again fellows, guess I'll need to get more creative. The spare tire sounds like the way to go over the ladder idea, just need to work around the rear hitch mount carrier for the Vespa. When the Vespa is on the carrier there won't be a lot of room for hanging the BBQ back there.

Stay Well,
Travel safe all of you heading out to Tucson,
Mike
