For those coming from the East going to the Tucson Convention, the following are some stops that you might consider:

If going through Midland, TX, the Petroleum Museum makes for a good visit. I wasn't all that interested until I found the wing where every model of the Chaparral Race Car is displayed. Quite interesting.

If you are near Clovis, NM take a few minutes and go to the Clovis Chamber of Commerce. In the basement is an interesting collection of Rock and Roll Memorabilia. Who knew that Clovis was a big center for rock and roll recordings? Norman Petty had a recording studio and recorded for famous names such as Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings and many others. Such hits as Peggy Sue, Sugar Shack came from here and these songs became known as the Clovis Sound.

Carlsbad Caverns is another good stop. Free if you have an "old goat" pass (US National Parks Senior Pass).

If you are near Deming, NM and need to spend the night before rolling into Tucson, the Deming Roadrunner RV park is a good bet. Jim Hoag who manages the place knows a lot about the GMC Motorhome and as a kid rode in the prototype "mule". His Dad was an engineer in new product development and one of his first projects was the GMC Motorhome.

If you are coming from the South (Texas area) DO-NOT take 285 to get to Carlsbad. It is nothing but oil fields and a wet, mud caked, 2 lane road. The traffic is mostly heavy trucks dropping wet mud on the road. It will get all over your coach, especially the undercarriage and is like concrete to get off.

We thought it would be nice to go from Carlsbad to see Pecos on our way to El Paso. That was a big mistake.

A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

World class chillies to be found anywhere in town.

This is an excellently written blog by a California lady newly moved to Tucson. She is busy discovering many things to see and do, Saguaro national parks, Titan missile silo, Tombstone, arts, crafts, swap meets, etc. Many, many interesting things your DW may want to check out.

NE of El Paso, on the way from Carlsbad Caverns, is Hueco Tanks State Park: https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/hueco-tanks Very cool place with a nice campground. Also on that road is Guadalupe Mountains National Park: https://www.nps.gov/gumo/index.htm Another cool place with a not so nice, parking lot campground. Still worth a visit for the hiking.

In New Mexico, depending which route you are taking, there is White Sands, near Alamogordo, City of Rocks near Deming, Silver City is kind of a detour but includes our fave, Burro Mountain Homestead. Int AZ, just southeast of Willcox is Chiricahua Nat Mon. At Texas Canyon is the Triangle-T guest Ranch (with RV facilities) and the Amerind Museum, with Cochise Stronghold nearby. Also, Karchner Canyon State Park is a few miles south of I-10 near Benson.

There are TONS more things to do in and around Tucson as well.
