Bob, the particles that are going to be a problem in the final drive are
the size of half a bearing roller or half a ring gear tooth. Preceeded by a
WHOLE BUNCH OF GNASHING AND GRINDING. The very small particles don't seem
to get all the way up to the filler plug, choosing instead to remain in the
nether regions on the final drive case. I have seen several grenaded final
drives, and it seems to me that they are just fine until they aren't, and
then you are on the hook. The last one I know about occurred last fall. The
pinion bearing cage failed as well as the pinion shaft where the pinion
bearing is pressed on. It howled like a banshee on deceleration, but made
very little noise on pulling. It got the owner home in one piece. There was
only junk left inside the case. If I can find the e-pics, I will send you
some. I am on my cell phone now. So, I question if the magnet in the drain
plug will have much value. Better to take off the cover and flush the case
out, the way you have been doing it.

We use to supply the Magnet for the final drive drain plug for the Aluminum
cover that has the drain plug.
Should one have large partical, one is having an issue and it will damage
the unit.
We suggest people to drain it and refil.
We have supplied almost 3,000 final drive units and know of only 3 units
where a gear chipped off and caused a proplem.
We warrentied all and they had over 50-100,000 miles on them.
We have had few where the pion bearings have failed, again we took care of
it n/c .

I have a friend in computers who disassembles a lot of old hard drives. They typically have a very strong magnet in them, and he gave me a few. I have been sticking one to the outside of my final drive cover (stock steel) and upon changing the oil, have found a very small mound of what I assume is metal (very fine) on the inside of the cover at the magnet location. I'm guessing it is good to pull that stuff out of the oil no matter how small it is. That is why magnets are standard equipment in 4WD transfer cases and some newer transmissions.

A good source of these strong magnets is eBay. I glue the small “neodymium” magnets on the fuel tank (but not too near the pickup), oil pan, and trans pan. You don’t need a very big magnet to do the job. I glue them on so no one accidentally plucks them off. They work just as Carl described.
