Im the new owner of a 78 coach that has a few wrinkles to work out.
First up is the leveling system. I believe a pump is shot. It wont create pressure even though the piston is moving freely and the bore looks great. I swapped the heads and no change.
Finding a used one is pricey, and questionable to the length of time it will last. I'm curious if i can retrofit Viairs into it.
A couple of questions:
1) What is the function of the exhaust solenoid on the head of the pump? One harness reads 1 volt while pumping, and 12 when releasing air. The other reads 8v continuously, so there appears to be an issue there. Are these run off of the auto levelers?
2) The two center valves appear to really take care of the pressure release, so if those valves release pressure, why the exhaust valve on the compressor?

It was good to meet you, and things went by so fast that I forgot to welcome you to the group, family, cult, asylum.....
We got you home, and now things can get real interesting. Oh, and Fun - by the way.
By getting here, you have just collected a great big bunch of brand new old friends. You may think that my helpfulness is an outlier, but in this group, it is the norm. The only other community that I know of that is like this it the watermen of my world. Be aware that most of the people here have an agenda. That agenda is to see that you and the family get to enjoy your coach as much as we all do enjoy ours .
Something you need to do soon, build a sigfile. Go to <Control Panel> / <Account Settings> and scroll down. You will find the place to fill it in. We do like a real name, so that is covered, but you need to do a short bit about the coach, because there are differences that matter, like not all 78s have EL2 and important mods should be mentioned. Now, location is important, because so may choose to help (like the guy you met yesterday) and it helps to know if you are in striking range. The half of the group that gets this as E-mail does not get to see the header where yours says "Belleville".
Now, there is something else that I missed yesterday. As this community is so much like that of the watermen, I have taken to welcoming new owners here much as a new vessel or owner is welcomed there. So,

The valves on the compressors are the LOWER valves and are controlled by the sensors in the wheel wells. It is possible to replace the compressors with another type, but you will have to obtain and plumb in separate exhaust valves. Also the air dryer is incorporated in the compressor assemblies, so a filter/dryer should be provided.

switch? as one side is a constant 8v regardless of the inflate/deflate
switch position. The other is 1v on raise, and 12v on deflate,
I'm thinking of a single larger VIAIR with a tank as i have one from my 4x4
days.

LOVE IT, but the company says that it will not work with a tank, yet GMC
owners are using a tank =) Its awesome for $400 though!

I am not using tank on my 3 coaches and built my own with 2 pumps. Each

If you have a late 77 or 78, you should have the EL ll. It has two
compressors, with desiccant dryers, mounted on a metal frame along with
relays and solenoid valves. All connected up with plug in wire harnesses.
Ride height is controlled by a '70's version of electronic ride height
controls. Consists of mechanical linkages connected to shutter wheels with
gaps in the wheel that covers up or uncovers light emitting diodes focused
on photo transistors. When the gap in the shutter wheel allows the light to
shine through, the transistor either opens or closes a 12 volt current that
goes to one of the relays. The relay in turn turns on the compressor and
accompanying solenoid to allow air to be pumped into the correct air bag.
This raises the coach, moves the shutter wheel, and opens the circuit to
the relay, shutting off the compressor. Works opposite to that when
lowering. Another relay and solenoid is actuated, air is bled out of the
bag to lower, that moves the shutter wheel, blocking the light, and opens
the relay. Clear as mud, right.
When some ham fisted, well intentioned, technician has not been in there
mucking about, and the 40 year old electronic circuit boards are working
correctly, the system works really well. Only two air hoses, one left, and
one right. Way fewer leak points.

Gene, can you provide more detail on how you built yours? I have a concept
of a large pump and tank, utilizing solenoids with the stock control
system. I also purchased the wireless system as a totally separate
scenario. I'm not quite sure which I want to use yet. I'm leaning towards
