What high AMP Alternator are you using? [message #322211] |

I have a stock Toronado 455 setup. However, is is not in a GMC.
The 455 in the GMC is the closest to what I am working on and dealing with.
It is in a 60's type RV that shares some issues and more than the GMC.
I personally would prefer to go DELCO.
I'm looking for something that is mainly a bolt in, yet bigger and better than the 12 SI.
WHY - I don't have the room that the GMC might have to relocate the Alternator.
FYI - I'm looking for no less than 140AMPS.
I'm thinking CS130, CS130D or even the CS144 - IF it will fit WITHOUT changing out the brackets.
WHY - Future plans = 3 electric cooling fans, 2 heater fans, electric fuel pump, Air Ride, HEI Distributor, Radio, TV, 2 computers and all factory lights.
QUESTIONS:
1. Does the GMC Motorhome 455 use the stock Toronado 455 Alternator bracket setup? OR was the bracket setup made for the GMC setup?
2. What is the largest AMP alternator you have been able to install in your GMC - WITHOUT - changing out the brackets?
3. IF you had to change the brackets
A. What Alternator did you use?
B. What did you end up having to do with the stock bracket setup?

Hey Tony,
Matt here - again...
The two leg 12SI is a pretty standard frame, it can be built up to about 120 amp and if you do, I an ASSURE you that it will need 2 (two, deus, zwei) belts as the limit for one is about 100 amp. From what I am remembering, the FEAD layout of the passcar was not that different than the coach.
Most of the CS machines that I messed with were the single foot kind and while I know the brackets can be adapted, it is not always simple to get the alignment correct.
I suggest that if no one here has a better answer that you contact Balmar (www.balmar.net) and ask them. Back in the boat work days I bought more than a few charging systems from them.
Your future list is long, but only the cooling fans are real big load. Most of the rest isn't all that big.

Toronado uses a smaller alternator as it does not have the additional
battery to support

There was a 140 or 150 amp option offered on transmodes. I looked it up one time for a 1978 GMC. It was used on people movers etc. with high electrical demands and low speed local driving. Roger Black had one on his coach. I do not remember if it was a one wire or remote sense alternator.
You might dig through the GMC parts books looking for it. If I remember correctly it was a double belt driven alternator. I do not remember much more as that was 12 or 14 years ago that I saw it.

The original alternator on the '78 models is rated at 145 amps

First of all, any old school rebuilder can rebuild those into the 150 range with no problem.
Second, if you do not have factory air, your alt, may not be were most GMC's are located. None AC 455s have it on the passenger side.

Thank you for your input. Fist off, I prefer a factory big AMP Alternator (that will fit) over rebuilding an older smaller unit up to become a big AMP Alternator.
The factory newer and bigger Alternators are also designed with better cooling in mind.
The case was designed that way to allow for better cooling over the older smaller cases.
Second, The Alternator is located in front of the driver's side valve cover.
(FYI - I tried to attach a picture 800x600 142kb - which is less than the restriction and it would not upload.)
Anyways, It has been a while since I have seen it. But I also believe that is has a dual pulley.
Which I hope to transfer to the new Alternator; once I hear what others have done and I decide which one to go with.

Jim,
I understand that. Plus with electric cooling fans and HEI Dist, Elec FP, and so many other add-ons now-a-days; is why I am asking GMC Motorhome owners what Alternator they have gone with - when updating to a larger AMPs.

But there are mechanical things I don't like. My wife, Marie, likes the looks.
We have only used used them (UV256 and UV520) locally to take to shows during our short season up here.
Before I finish fully restoring it, I'm currently waiting for a complete CFD report on UV520 to address an over-heating issue with it.

I thought the 1978 GMC had a 403 and not the 455.
As it is I don't know enough about my 455 - YET - let alone if the 403 is much different or not; to be using that alternator.

The large frame 80 amp style Delco alternators were used throughout motorhome production and are interchangeable among years. The '78 version was upgraded to 145 amps.

Good to know on the 78s as higher output. We had the large frame alternator which was avaliable on GM cop cars and if you checked HD alternator in the days of ordering cars. I have a 76 Grand Lemans we ordered with HD alternator and it uses the same large frame 80A

I don't think that is a correct statement. A 145 amp alternator would
require about a #4 wire to the isolator. I've never seen a cable that
big on any '78 coach, nor have I heard of any. I really believe the L04
option was only available on a transmode. If there are any '78
coaches with that option, please feel free to correct me.

I've never seen one on any 78 Coachman up fitted coaches that I have worked
on. They were all transmode coaches when they left Pontiac. But, that being
said, they might have been ordered that way by Coachman. Actual transmode
coaches that did not end up as motor homes may have been fitted a number of
different ways. I know window and door placement varied a lot on transmode
as well as bathroom and tanks and generators. Roof air also. Just from
personal experience, yours might vary.

I wrote slightly in error. The official GMC parts book lists the 145 amp alternator as an option in '78 (RPO LO4). My '78 does not have this option and came with the 80 amp.

I still don't know if it would fit and I have not heard from anyone who has used said Alternator on a 455 setup.
Tony (Ontario Canada) Marie and I are blessed to have had a 2nd chance to buy our farm. Still hoping and more importantly praying to be able to build a garage. Our 1970 Ultravan #520 has an Olds Toronado 455 in back.
