have excessive play in steering column I think.
have replaced steering box, intermediate shaft, tie rod ends, all ball joints,
front end alignment. but still have to much play in steering. told to direct my problem to chuck boyd

Yes - read Rob's steering tutorial then call Alex Ferrara in Fla. He is the steering Guru - has fixed 3 of mine so far. W/ the right parts it takes him about an hour and the difference is absolutely amazing!
Go from white knuckle fighting it all the time to driving w/ one finger and a thumb and it being a piece of cake.

Jerry,

Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum....

You already have a good sigfile - Thank you, that will be a help to everybody involved.

We see this sort of problem a lot. It comes from the old school of doing an alignment and then setting the toe with just one tie rod. In the case of a TZE, this is deadly. There are many parts that have to be in the correct relationship for it to be a good drive.

This is what Alex is so good at. It started after he spent $7K+ and nobody fixed the problem. I was on the way to doing the same thing but got good council from Dave Lenzi before I got that far.

Now, by getting here, you have just encountered a couple of thousand brand new old friends. It is possibly the best thing that can happen to a GMC owner. Everybody here is very interested in seeing that you have as good a experience with your coach as we have. It is a community of supportive and helping people. The stories could go on for a very long time and they are all true. As the only other community that I know of at all like this is that of the watermen that are my world, I have taken to welcoming new owners here much as a new owner or vessel is welcomed there. So,

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Yes Alex helped me alot. We got intermediate sahft and steering box lined up,so that I was at least able to drive from southern California to Oregon. Got it home and had a line up shop set alignment to Alex's instructions and it tracks nice now but alot of play in steering wheel. Think I need steering column rebuilt or replace.

Jerry,

About the only thing that gets play in the column is the lower bearing.
They're still available from GM. Try one, I think you'll like it.

If you follow Robs writeup you can pinpoint where the slop is rather than guessing. To check the lower bearing just grab the lower column shaft at the top of the upper CV and shake against that bearing. They get road grit and wear. You pull the wire retainer and it slips off the bottom of the column. I have cleaned and repacked those on many GM cars over the years to extend the life and steering feel.
