I read Richards post in the past regarding the temps of the onan
compartment, would it make any sense to install a 12 volt blower ?(maybe
thermostatically controlled) They seem to help cool the 455 compartment
but my wife hates the noise. Certainly wouldn't help the functioning of a
halon unit though.

One of the Marine Axial fans might work well in this application. Thermostat controlled switches are easy to obtain. You could also 'roll' your own, using an Ardunio. Be sure to consider some way to detect an actual fire in the compartment. A running fan would
really add to the problem.

Take a look at the 'new genset' pictures in my albums on the photosite. The 23' had an auto radiator fan attached to the bay door which pressurized the com[partment. It was powered through a relay on the fuel pump.

Ron,

The Onans don't really have a heat problem apart from it ending up under the coach on the 26 with NH package. I have been told that the air discharge sold by Ragusa pretty much fixes that.

Johnny's approach is interesting, but you have to be careful. The PowerDrawer packages all pull cooling air to make a negative pressure inside the machine space to preclude exhaust intrusion into the living spaces.

It is my opinion that it would not be much help. You already have a large 12" or 13" 1800 rpm fan on the front of the generator sucking fresh air in the lower rear, then across and through the generator and engine, and blowing it out of the lower front. I'm not quite sure where you would get additional air for another fan and where you would exhaust it.

Ken, the fan I had (sold the coach) blew air into the compartment at a greater rate than the genset blew it out. This means the compartment is under positive pressure relative to the outside, which means more air goes across the genset, and the genset fan pushes instead of pulling and pushing. This also helps make up for leaks in the tin around the genset. It was put it for the Junkerac which came with the coach, and I considered it essential for the heathen chinee set it left with, especially since the H C one was a contractor set removed from the frame which has an exhaust pipe going through the compartment to the outside muffler.

Johnny, My comments were strictly about an OEM installed Onan. I have no clue what would be required or possible to lash up with some other brand in there.

Ron the main engine cooling blower will do more than any sux blower.
You can make it be more efficient with air deflector and oil filter Air seal
Also run Full Synthetic oil

Remember if your foam seal around the Onan oil filter has succumbed to dust, being 40+ years old, a typical can foam cooler will easily and cheaply do the job.

I have thought about adding a 'Pancake' motor type fan that would run onl when shut down to cool the compartment and help evac any vapors, but I have to agree the onan fan will move far more air while running

Those fans can be found at auto swap meets for cheap- they do pull a lot of amps for their size though.
