For those who followed the thread about the GMC'er broken down in Birmingham, Kerry and I got him in touch with Mark Creel. He spent some time at Mark's shop here in Birmingham and left yesterday. Apparently, according to a message he left for Mark, he got 3-4 hours north on I-65 before the engine quit. As far as we know, he is still there, wherever there is. I'm assuming he is somewhere between the TN/AL line and Nashville. Do we have anyone in that area that is willing to try and get in touch with Jim?
From Mark, I know that the mechanical fuel pump was weeping/leaking fuel. Mark wanted to change it, but Jim refused. It's possible Jim has simply run out of fuel or, based on Mark's assessment of the condition of the coach, it could be something more significant. If anyone wants to take a shot at helping Jim further in the area, please let me know and I will attempt to put you in touch with him.

3-4 hours north? Sounds like he just ran out of gas. That said, why would one refuse to replace a weeping fuel pump?

As cheap and as easy as it is to replace a fuel pump, this does not make sense. If the pump is now bad then he will have a tow bill and have to replace the pump anyway. Or maybe have lay on the ground along I-65 and replace it. Of course he will also have to travel somewhere to go buy a new pump.
I hope someone told him to check the oil to make sure it is not also leaking gas into the crankcase.

It's not that he doesn't want to be helped. I'll just be blunt. He's confused, disoriented, is out of pain meds for his 6 back surgeries and can't get a refill until he gets back to Illinois. He also has a doctors appointment Friday that he is in a panic to get back for. I told him when this first started that, given the issues we suspected with his coach, he might be better off having the Coach towed somewhere it could be repaired and driving home in his towd.
I hope someone takes my keys before I get in a similar state. We're going out of town tomorrow and I'm just not in a position to re-engage.

I'm going to second this. Mark said the reason he did not want the gas pump changed was that he had an electric pump that worked fine and that Mark told him he wouldn't get to it until the next day. Jim left in the afternoon yesterday, after Mark had finished fixing what he could for the day. Mark is a nice guy, but he's not a young man either. He works as much as he can in a day and when he says he's done for the day, he's done. Jim was determined to get going and get home for this Dr.'s appointment he has been fixated on making.
In the end, this decision is probably costing him even more time, but I'm not sure he is in a position to make that rational determination. Due to his pain, Jim is also not going to lay on the ground and fix this issue. From what I understand that is not possible for him, nor am I sure he has that kind of mechanical knowledge and ability.
Like Kerry, I am leaving town Saturday for vacation. Even if I wasn't, a 6 or 8 hour round trip to bring him a can of gas and try to decide if the problem is somewhere else isn't possible for this working stiff with 3 kids. I feel bad for Jim, but I think he needs to have the coach towed somewhere for some serious repairs and drive home in his towd.
