A friend wants a 77 or 78 with the 403. He's found a 1977. The outside body tag to the left of the side entry door has a serial number of 6673. And a build date of Feb of 1977. So when did the 403 start? Bob Dunahugh

The tag next to the door is not the TZE number. He needs to check under the RH hood.

You are also assuming it has the original powertrain. Matbe show him how to spot a small block and carry a tape measure.

A 403 only has 5 rocker arm cover bolts per side. The 455 has 10.

Also the carb gas line to fuel pump is on the right side of the thermostat housing on the 455. The gas line is on the left side of thermostat housing on the 403.

What's the 6673 mean? And about the date of the first 403? Haven't got the VIN at this point. Tornado's are in the area for the next 22 min. And having 75 MPH straight line winds. Bob Dunahugh

Do we assume that it is a Coachmen Royale?
If so, the 6673 is a number assigned by Coachmen. I know that they used to put a plate by the door.

They probably incremented their numbers across the whole line of things they produced because they never made 6673 Royales and Birchhavens.

Actually I think it was sooner than that. My 77 Kingsley with a 455 was built in Dec. 76. Soon after that date they switched to a 403.
Bob said the one his friend was looking at had a build date of Feb. 1977.
