Now that a big batch of the Birchhaven projects are done (bodywork, cooling and steering)
its time to turn attentions back to the Eleganza projects later this month.
The beefy Trojan T-145 deep cycles served their time well with our solar array,
but now after 8 years its definitely time to replace them: one pair on each side up front, and one pair in the
rear near the generator. The 145’s are slightly taller and pricier than the standard T-105’s.
So we’re considering same-sized T-125’s, or going Costco, or Interstate http://www.interstatebatteries.com/m/category/golf/golf-car-content or even this “US" brand that we heard good things about http://www.batterytown.com/us-battery-us125xc-6v-deep-cycle-golf-cart-battery.html
With the onboard studio, our electric needs (without generator noise) are a bit more extreme than most,
but this time around we gotta keep costs low-as-possible, so any first-hand reviews/prices on deep cycles (in SoCal) to fit our GMC front compartments (w/Ragusa battery trays) would of course be appreciated, thanks!
And instead of re-using the kinda fragile terminal extenders (which extend upwards from the battery post, allowing more connections to the post, while making everything too cramped up there), this time i’m gonna have to find a few junction/mounts for all the heavy-duty cable connections (and i’ll need 3 of them, one for each positive post of each battery pair), and each one has to be able to handle a size range from 4 gauge to 4/0, including: the solar connections, the 0 gauge for connecting parallel pairs of batteries up front, and then the monster 4/0 runs for going to the inverter. Might have to build my own junction boxes, ‘cause between searching Grainger and high-end car stereo install places, i’m not seeing any commercially available options that handle up to 4/0. Any ideas where else i can look? ideally they’d be shielded with see-through plastic. And ideally they’d mount on top of the fiberglass recess for the headlights, with a heavy-duty pig-tail running to the positive post.
Installation will probably involve another week in Tijuana, ‘cause we’ll take the opportunity to tackle all the over-due work up front: weld those broken aluminum struts behind the radiator; rebuild the leaking steering box; and yes, some more bodywork with the front cap… reinforcing those cracked thin parts below the front access doors, re-mounting the grille…. all vestiges of the crash of 2003, when the rig was totalled-out with a bent frame!
Sometimes it takes a few attempts to get a job done right, Right?
cheers all,.

Take a look at the WAYTEK web site, they specialize in low voltage wiring devices

I guess I am surprised that with all the respect that Trojan has that the bank needs replacing after only 7 years. My Sam's
Club Druacells are 8 now and are only down to about 90% of the original capacity. They will have to get to 80% before I will replace the bank.
Matt - ensconced at Bean Station Its not the quality of the Trojan batteries, it is a matter of charge management. Chronic undercharging without even actually discharging them too deep can lower the life to two years or less. Getting them COMPLETELY charged at least once a week (and never discharging them too deep) can extend the life expectancy to over ten years. Check this page and note the voltage for bulk charging in the "Charging" section:
http://www.trojanbattery.com/tech-support/battery-maintenance/
Also download the users guide pdf and note that table 4 says the same thing, but includes an "absorption" setting.
http://www.trojanbattery.com/pdf/TrojanBattery_UsersGuide.pdf
Ever wonder how hybrid cars get more than 10 years out of the batteries? Charge management.
..
Trojan had some issues a while back but are supposed to be back to the top of their game now. The US Battery has had good press lately and I installed a pair last year. Can't really give you a report either way but I don't really like that they seem to use more water than my Trojan's do in the SOB.
Battery maintenance is everything for life expectancy, from charging to use/depth of discharge. Whatever you use, be sure to check with the specific manufacturer for charging recommendations. The generic settings most chargers are set for seldom give you the best results. Charging a battery only .2 volts under manufacturer spec will make a significant difference in battery life. Battery science is a whole world of it's own with a huge amount of miss information floating around.

It is surely a matter of charge management,
and to also not let your batteries run dry!… add distilled water, when needed,
in our case it seemed about every few months. (We use this rig a LOT)
When we’re on shore power we’ve got a high quality Magnum Inverter/charger
that keeps the float voltage where it needs to be for maintaining battery life.
(Also, we’d do an equalization charge about once a year)
When we’re remote, its the same situation with the quality of our Blue Sky solar charge regulator…
proper float voltage…
But... considering how many late-night studio sessions we got off battery power
the past 8 years… considering how many charges and discharges,
and especially the intensity of some of the discharges, fairly high amperage,
often running a studio inside and a rooftop speaker system outside,
and sometimes even running our electric water heater off inverter power….
hey, I’m satisfied with 8 years of service!!
But i’m not a devotee to the Trojan brand., and i’ll surely peruse the suggestions and prices, thanks!

[Commercial} Trojan Man! Sorry, wrong commercial. :)
The batteries lasted a good long time. I'd get another set if they are
available.
I got 10 years out of a Die Hard Gold from sears.
Ive also got "less than stellar" service from some chain store batteries,
too.

Hi Greg and Others !
Can you share which brand and model batteries you decided to go with? I am in the same boot. In need of 2 new batt for the Coach. I called Costco, $75/each or Batteries+ Duracell's for $105/each
Found some sears for 145/Each etc.
Since I don't have the equipment to really check + monitor the charging process, I am wondering if I am better of with cheapos ????
Thanks Dutch Marc

Get the ones with the higher amp hours. They will cost perhaps $20 more but if you are dry camping it is worth it

I read somewhere that there are only 4 manufacturers of automotive type lead acid batteries left in the US and most of the batteries are made by two of them. Johnson Controls and Exide. Most other brands are made by these two and branded accordingly. I have not heard of any brand importing automotive type lead acid batteries.
Also there is a minor shortage of lead in the US as the last smelter in the US was shut down by the EPA a couple of years ago. So all lead for batteries is sourced from recycling or imported. This caused the price of batteries go up. Double in some cases.

You might want to check out one of these instead of a hydrometer:

I have been using an optical refractometer for over 40 years. It will give you cooling system freezing temperature as well as your battery specific gravity (level of charge). It is extremely accurate and only takes one drop of fluid for testing.
Mine looks like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/MISCO-Refractometer-Battery-Specific-Fahrenheit/dp/B00BS9X8J2/ref=sr_1_53?ie=UTF8&qid=1495674401&sr=8-53&keywords=a ntifreeze+tester+refractometer
That is a bit expensive now, (it was expensive 40 years ago too) so I just did a quick search and found this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Portable-Glycol-Car-Battery-Refractometer-Antifreeze-Tester-Fluid-Ethylene-ATC-/252775961331
There are many of these on eBay. Most are from China and show the temperatures in deg C instead of deg F but you can easily convert. But some are shipped from the USA.
These don’t have a glass tube like some of the float testers so they should last you a lifetime.
