Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car, understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car. Hp is how fast you hit the wall, and torque is how far you take the wall with you when you hit it.

Thanks David governor, choke, voltage regulator, flywheel alternator, bridge rectifier, starter, if it bolts on, take it off.
Armatures are unobtanium. Make sure you salvage it.
Send everything to Jim Miller in Ohio. If you can get the whole thing to him, he can put it to good use.
I don't know what you mean "non-functional". If it runs, but doesn't make power, the generator section can be repaired. If it doesn't run, the engine can probably be repaired.
The only thing that kills the engine graveyard dead forever is worn so bad it has no compression. I have never heard of one getting to that state. Everything else can be fixed.

David,
You should add your geographic location to your signature. It would help others in situations like this. Someone nearby might be interested in the Onan for some of the hard to find parts.

seems there's more to salvage off this this i thought, so i'll won't toss the thing for now till i can find someone that can pick it up and do something good with it, I'm in southern ca though, it's non-functional as i never had a carburetor and exhaust for it (so it's condition is unknown).
Thanks David

Thanks David Jim K sells carbs and exhausts.
If someone can do a compression check for you, that is all you need to know on the engine. If it has no spark, cure what ails it (coil or points/condenser), or install the Pertronix upgrade.
If the field windings check at ~38 ohms (at the bridge rectifier) that is a good sign. The windings can be replaced, but is something like $500 plus shipping to and from Jim Miller. If the field checks out, and the bridge rectifier is good, it will probably make 120VAC. Bridge rectifiers are cheap, and can be acquired from Jim K. The compounding reactor and the armature are the only other parts in the generator section that can fail, and they rarely do. Grease the bearings and get another 40 years out of the generator section.
And then you have a working Onan 6Kw set.

Just wondering what is that Pertronix upgrade ?
As my 78 royale coach Onan cranks but doesn't run ( I still need to check some things that someone else suggested in my other post about it though.
Thanks David

I never understand what "cranks but won't run" means.
Be specific. The starter turns it but it won't fire. Or the starter turns it and it sputters and dies. The word "crank" should never be used to talk about starting an engine. It is ambiguous. Could mean the starter turns the engine and no combustion at all, or the starter turns it and it sort of tries to run but dies.
If it sputters and dies, it is a fuel problem or a board problem, not an ignition system problem.
Even if it won't fire, it might just be a dry intake and no gas at all getting to the cylinders. It might be getting spark but no gas.
You need to figure out if it is no spark OR no fuel/air getting to the cylinders.
Get a can of starting fluid. Take the air filter off. Jumper pin 5 to pin 9 and wait for the fuel pump to slow/stop ticking.
If the fuel pump never even ticks, it is seized. If the fuel pump never slows or stops ticking, it is not getting gas from the tank to the carb. Could be low gas in the tank, fuel line leaking and letting air in, or a bad fuel pump.
Once the fuel pump slows or stops, press the starter and, while the engine is spinning ,spritz some starting fluid into the carb air intake. If it sputters or tries to run, you have a carburetor problem, not an ignition problem.
That is assuming it has compression. I have never heard of lack of compression on an Onan, but it is a possibility.
If it runs with pin 5 jumpered to pin 9, there are some more tests to run to make sure the flywheel AC voltage is getting to pin 8 or the oil pressure sender is working and pin 12 is getting what it needs.
Post back when you figure out what is keeping it from running - spark, air/fuel mix, or board problem.

Get it running first , then install the Pertronix kit.
Should you need any support help, call me and we will help you to trouble
shoot.
