Barb went to Oklahoma City with Linda, and I from Shawnee in her 73 GMC. Today it hit 200,000 on it's original trans. She said that her trans was acting like it was slipping. In Iowa. I have an extra trans that has about 12,000 miles on it that I have no use for. As my new trans is coming to replace the trans that just brought us back from Ok. It has about 22,000 on it. So I put TransX in her trans in hope she could get to Iowa. The TransX stopped the slippage. And got her the 500 miles to my house. TransX got Mike, and Billie Kelley home some months ago. Doesn't always work. But if your in a situation like these. Might be worth trying. Bob Dunahugh

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Bob Dunahugh for helping Barbara Grandoe in her
time of great need. That woman is tough as nails and not afraid of anything but
THAT was just more than she could handle. Thank you so much for being her
saving grace.
She'll be able to travel and camp host for years to come because of your help,
Bob.

Thanks Billey. Your absolutely correct about Barb. I'm going to have her stay here for this week. The trans is the weak area. Her GMC is in pretty good condition over all for 200,000 miles. Put a starter in it last Monday. So today I'm pulling that electric engine fan out. And putting in the fan, and fan shroud in from the burned GMC. New ignition switch for safety sake. Engine tune up. Then change the engine, and final drive lubes. Clean out the old rear pin grease. Then grease it with the greaser fitting that gets the grease to that inter bear. With a good going over. She should be in good shape for some time. Rear wheel bearings have been done. Engine is good, and it has a new aluminum radiator. She ordered a Digi-panel from Jim at Applied. With it's alarm for trouble. An inferred temp reader for the wheel bearings. These will help keep her out of some troubles out in the middle of no were. Bob Dunahugh

Matt, Aaaaamen! Spell check sucks, when it comes to technical subjects.
Many times after I have pushed "send" I re-read what I have writ, and I
think to myself, what the???. Did I just do that?

Vern,
I believe Bob meant infrared.
Spell checker drive me crazy when I am writing technical things and they
don't like so perfectly good words.

Bob,
You're not going to be able to use a bogie greaser on that '73 coach. The
'73s only had one side hole midway between the bushings.
Also, the 11/32" hole is not drilled as deep because of that.

Also, on the coaches with the 1.250" bogie pins, there is grease zerks on
the inboard end of the pin as well as the visible ones on the outboard end.
I am right now pressing new bushings into a later set of bogies
with the 1.500" pins. New bushings, new pins, new top hat bushings, new
Quadra bag set up, 3 new spindles, all new wheel bearings, and 6 wheel disc
brakes. I would be installing the rear sway bars and reaction arm brakes
too, if they were available. Already has the 1 ton front end and my
wireless remote ride height system. The existing pins and bogies are worn
out to the point that they steer the coach. Won't when I get done with it.

First I ever heard of zerks on each end. Do both feed grease to the center hole? Was this a factory thing so it didn't matter which way the pin was installed?

Steve and others, Early production coaches had 1.250" bogie pins. The lube
holes only went as far as the 2 ea 7/8" bushings on each end. That only
lasted a short time, and then the lube hole was step drilled clear through
to the bushings on the inboard side.
Later coaches were fitted with 1.500" bogie pins, and the lube holes
were first step drilled, and later, smooth bore drilled.
That is why the bogie greasers sold as an aftermarket kit work in
some coaches, and not others.
That is what I know based on working on these coaches. Your experiences may
vary.

Vern. You can get one from most tool supply stores. There about $27 at Harbor Freight. At every fuel stop. I go around and check one lug nut at each wheel. Your looking to see if there are any that are hotter then the rest. This will tell you if you have bearing, or brake issues. Mine generally run about 5 to 7 degrees above ambient temps. On the Sun side. Add about 3 degrees higher. Coming back from Shawnee. I noticed that the left wheel bearing on the dolly started running about 8 degrees higher then normal. Checked the bearing today. The outer bearing needs to be replaced. I love the Digi panel from Applied. As it has an alarm that sounds off if any temp on the engine, or trans start to get high. Also cover volts, and oil pressure for drops. Gauges are fine. But you have to keep looking at them. The panel shows levels with LED light bars. Then sound off with an alarm to get your attention to look at the light bars. Bob Dunahugh 78 Royale

Bob,
TransX was a good choice *in this case* to get Barb to your place. Swelled the seals enough to make the trip. But in the long term, that stuff is very bad for the seals. The chemical will continue to swell the seals and turn them to mush, and eventually disable many of the functions of the transmission. Make sure that you flush the trans cooling system completely before you fill and restart the engine. That may mean replacing the converter. IMO you need to get all of that chemical out of the system to avoid long term future issues with any rebuilt transmission. Just what I'd do.
This (may) also be true of mixing certain brands of transmission fluid. The last trans that I replaced had Amsoil synthetic in it from the start. When it came time to do a fluid change, I did not have ready access to Amsoil, so I changed with Mobil 1. One year later the trans was acting up,so I sent it to a rebuilder only to find that every seal in the trans had swelled up to the point that many were hard to remove. Most had turned to mush. The rebuilder said that he recognized this and seen it many times when people had used something like TransX. I had NEVER used any kind of additive in that trans. So the only thing we could think of that may have caused the issue is the mixing of Amsoil and Mobil 1 fluids. I have only this personal experience with mixing and no other evidence that mixing these two products may be detrimental...just a gut feeling. While I would use either product again, I will never mix these two products. JMHO

Matt, I guess that I did NOT make myself clear about the grease fittings.
Not all of the small pins had lube holes bored through to the inside
bushings. Those pins had grease fittings on both ends.
The pins that had lube bores all the way through, did not have zerk
fittings on the inside.
It almost looks to me like there were "running production changes" and
stuff like the bogie assemblies got special attention during the model
year. I don't know that for a fact, but I have encountered lots of stuff on
the 73 coaches like the lower control arm reinforcements, and some rear
drum brake stuff like self adjusters and different sized brake wheel
cylinders, that you find on some coaches and not on others.
I do know of recall tsb's (technical service bulletins) about the
control arms, but not the bogie pins. There well could have been, I am just
not aware of it. So, I guess my best answer is, some have grease fittings
on the inboard side, some don't. It's a GMC.

I tend to believe, that the additive was put in originally, and mixing the
two fluids was not what caused the problem.
I subscribe to several tech magazines and they have never mentioned mixing
brands causing any problems.
