If you are traveling on I-65 or I-265 between Kentucky and Indiana, they now have converted to a TOLL on all bridges. It will now cost you $7.00 without a transponder and $5.00 with one to cross the bridge. It always was free in the past.

Plan your traveling routes accordingly.

I bet there are going to be a lot of very surprised travelers. And a bunch of pissed off commuters.

Tolls are to pay for several new bridges and upgrades on existing. Still irritates me. They are supposed to be FREEWAYS!

Now, if the politicians who made this taxing decision were honest, they would agree to remove the tolls, after the new bridges were upgraded. However, they are addicted to $$. It's their drug of choice. I know of this happening only once. The first tunnel under the river in Mobile (1948) was 25 cents and the politicians promised to remove the tax when the bonds were retired. This tunnel is now free.

Thanks, Ken. This modifies sleeping choices for the Louisville KY dog show - which was once the biggest in the country in terms of entries. It's next weekend. And Phipps is correct - the Alabam Legislooters tried to keep the money but Big Jim (Folsum) declared that they had promised, so oput they came.
This would add one night's stay costs if I took the GMC and stayed in Indiana... which used to be the move.

That makes twice that they kept a promise. (Wow, are we up to TWO already?)
The other I know of was the Defense Highway (now I-95) bridge over the Thames in New London/Groton Connecticut. This was in the late 50s early 60s, we came up on what was the toll plaza and had change ready and the booths were GONE.

The turnpike between Fort Worth and Dallas opened in 1957 as a toll road with
the promise to remove the toll when it was paid off. That happened in 1977 and
the toll booths were removed a week later.

Hmmmm? Trolls for tolls? Trust me, you pay for roads and bridges one way or
another. Check the price on your gas pumps. The taxes are more than the
product. The tax barons are far worse than the oil barons. In Oregon, there
presently is underway a "study", conducted by the department of revenue and
paid for out of, you guessed it, gasoline taxes, to see how much revenue is
being "LOST?" by hybrid and electric vehicles with their vastly improved
fuel economy. It includes monitors attached to these vehicles to record
miles traveled. They are thinking of adding a "per mile traveled" tax along
with gas taxes. Never quits.

There was talk in the 79s of the legislature continuing the tolls on the
DFW Tollway. Fierce opposition arose with threats that "the citizens of
Texas would never again support any future tollway" if the original promise
to end collection after payback was not upheld.

I watched as they bulldozed the tollbooths in 1977, keeping that promise.
Now, according to Wikipedia:

"There are approximately 25 current *toll roads in the state of Texas*. Toll
roads
are
more common in Texas than in many other U.S. states, since the relatively
low revenues from the state's gasoline tax limits highway planners' means
to fund the construction and operation of highways."

The only difference since 1977 is that they no longer promise to ever end
toll collection!

Hugs,
Vern

There are several very good economic papers that demonstrate the gas tax is an extremely poor way of funding roads. The better solution is to go by mileage at your annual registration and then multiply the mileage by a factor that accounts for the weight of a vehicle, as heavier vehicles do more damage and require more expensive construction.

Unfortunately this tax would have to be administered by the Federal Government, standardizing the vehicle registration process amongst the states. In our current environment, this kind of expansion of powers is impossible. We would also have to significantly strengthen penalties for rolling back odometers, though that is harder in the digital age than it was in the analog.

Regardless, we will continue to be assailed by a gas tax, which does a poor job of actually taxing the users appropriately for usage and damage and will continue to drop in revenue per mile as vehicles become more efficient. That will lead to more toll roads to supplement the falling tax dollars. Although the proposed destruction of the EPA and rolling back of the most recent mileage targets might put a bandaid on the problem as Americans pay more for the gas tax as we wallow in unnecessary inefficiency while leaving a wonderful planet for the next few generations.

Render unto Caesar.......

tolls are a pretty regressive tax......but it does amuse when my fellow American complain about taxes...They have no idea just how low they are here.

Fuel tax plus a registration fee which reflected the true cost of the vehicle's weight would do. We need only overcome the trucking industries lobbying to keep weight costs down. Or develop a flying pig, which would be more likely anyhow.

Pete, I, for one American, do know the ratios and proportions of personal
income to taxation. Doesn't mean that I have to embrace the fact that taxes
rarely are removed or lowered. Our Representative form of government
provides some checks and balances to the increasing spiral of taxes and
fees. But I, and many of my friends are vigilant, and have to live within
our income. All that I ask, is for our local, state, and federal
governments do the same, and be wise stewards of our money. The less taxes
I pay means more discretionary funds I have to spend on fuel for my GMC.

I believe Kentucky eliminated most of the tolls on their "Parkways" after they were paid off.

As far as this new toll system goes, it will bias me to avoid Jeffersonville, IN and Louisville, KY whenever possible. As an example, I go to Bean Station every year, I have two fast routes and one slow route to choose from. One faster one is through Louisville and the other one is through Cincinnati. Guess which way I am going now.

Actually what is going on here is there were 2 free bridges across the Ohio river there. They wanted to add a third one and pay for it with tolls. The problem is with the new one being toll very few people would use it, so they put the same tolls on all 3 of the bridges. Problem solved.

I stay out of NE Illinois for the same reason. I did wander 2 miles over the line to buy an in stock $200 item a few weeks ago. I found that the sales tax was now 10%.

Anyone who wants to get the EZ pass can get them at www.ezdrivema.com They don't charge for the transponders or a monthly fee and they are good anywhere you need an EZ pass. Some states charge for each transformer plus a monthly fee (Ohio). We live in Ohio and got the EZ pass from Massachusetts with no problem. We have 2 setup for the cars and 1 for the GMC.
