Hi all. I am now part of this wonderful community with my purchase of a 1977 Palm Beach. It was purchased for $400 so there is nowhere to go but up from here!
Here's my story. I have owned many GMC busses (fishbowls) that I used to buy in Alaska for $500 and bring them down to the lower 48. They were 40' 1969 GMC busses with a Detroit Diesel motor. They ran like tops and were solid as the day they were made. No power steering and tons of aluminum. I sold most of them to a collector in Holland and one is still here somewhere in Colorado. The last one I got rid of after we had our second child and bought a 1964 airstream which I mostly got finished renovating. I restore old houses so I know my way around all trades.
I have always admired the GMC motorhome and how some of it was derived from the busses I had so much fun with. I was discussing this with my buddy Eric a few weeks back. A week ago, we were going to pick up some reclaimed semi trailer floor for a kitchen island in my latest house and did not have cash. We stopped at a bank in Commerce City and as I was getting the cash, Eric hits me hard and says, "dude, look!" There it was sitting amongst a bunch of semi trailers the motorhome we were just talking about.

This is how we found it shoved in this place. Out of view from busy Colorado blvd so not many people could see it. It was a wreck for sure but the body was nice. There was a bum living in it and a few windows busted out. Someone had scrapped the radiator and other metal parts from it. I found the owner and offered to just take it off his hands. He came back at $400 and I said yes.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/500/medium/IMG_09491.JPG

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/500/medium/IMG_09452.JPG

Ace towing and the nicest young driver helped me free it from its resting place and get it towable. The rear end was about an inch off the ground as it went downs the road behind the wrecker.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/500/medium/IMG_09522.JPG

The bags were obviously deflated so I noticed that the connections were standard 1/4" air tool fittings. I ran to get two male nipples and put them on. With the wrecker's air hose and the shut off valve, the passenger side aired right up. On the drivers side, I was not so lucky. Blown bag. After thinking about it a bit, I cut the bag open and stuck a piece of 4x4 wood post in that got me some more ground clearance.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/500/medium/IMG_09501.JPG

Home was only 8 miles away so not bad. There were definitely some sparks from the tow hitch that would not come out. But we made it and now she sits next to the airstream ready to be worked on.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/500/medium/IMG_09531.JPG

Project scope:
First, clean it out. It smells like cat piss and a dirty bum so lots of ammonia and simple green.
Second, seal it up. Back window and a few side windows are gone. Probably plywood for now.
Third, get it running. The motor is missing the radiator and the carburetor. Have to research best options here.
Fourth, get it mobile. Air suspension and transmission work.

Project direction:
First, is it worth it? I think so since I can do all the work myself and thoroughly enjoy doing it. Also the upside resale will always be strong. Plus any new parts going on will be new and I do not cut corners. The wealth of information out there allows you to get deep into what all should be done in a restoration.
But I am starting with very little. The odometer says 3,000 something so I am guessing 103,000. Maybe this is just a parts coach and would be better off as yard art in my backyard.

I feel the fun part of this $400 stripped out coach is the ability to make it whatever. There were no value added things I bought!
These are the directions I have thought of so far.
1. Park it in my backyard, finish the inside and have it as a guest bedroom
2. Make a food truck out of it. I have not seen many and unique sells.
3. Make a party bus out of it. I used my big busses for party bus service in Orlando.
4. Make a mobile sales vehicle that I rent out to businesses. I.E. Weston Snowboards rents it for a season with their wrap on the outside and their products on the inside with a nice 70's lounge feel to it all.
5. Do a full renovation back to a fully functional rv. Less kitchen and storage, more open and seating. I like the idea of trying to rent it out on a platform like Airbnb for rvs. The one I saw recently is Campanda. That could pay for the renovations and who wouldn't want to rent it!

Well that's my story. What do you think?
Would love to hear the feedback from the community. Has this been done? Successfully?
See you on the road!
John in Denver.

5. Definitely. Except don't omit the kitchen. Make it back into the camper it was, with updated interior.

You didn't mention option #6...After you've stripped out the nasty interior, get the mechanicals right while using it as a work van for your house restoring. Very nice to have all your tools and an enclosed place to work on the remote jobsite.

I think I agree with Terry. it would make a great vehicle to haul wood, tools, ladders, ect... You already have the rear window busted out, so you might as well make that rear end open up.

you are smart, and figured out some basics already, search this site and do some reading. I do not think you will ever make any money on this thing, even if you did start out at $500. $10,000 later in parts, you may still have a $10,000 coach. The value is using and enjoying the coach.

John,

looking at your numbers again.. here is my opionion after owning and being around these great coaches for 6 years. I currently drive a GMC I paid $500 for and now have 8-9k in parts into it.

1. Great idea. Not sure about zoning issues. My runner has been used as a guest bedroom before.
2. they make great food trucks. You will find a few made out of a GMC.
3. I like the idea of party buses, and I use mine to haul friends around. It makes a great people hauler. Laws vary State to state, and getting the old RV licensed properly and legally to use as a party bus/Limo, can be an issue.
4. Keen footware did this. As far as renting it out to others, you may be a better salesman then most. Not sure you will have ROI, but maybe a good tax deduction
5. again- maybe a good tax deduction, but I just do not think you will have much financial success. these are great motorhomes, but they either take a ton of money to really make sure all systems are 100% and not going to fail on someone else, or they take a little tinkering and someone who has the patient and understanding that bad things can happen to good people.

keep updates and pictures coming. Love seeing these get rescued and used!

Thanks for the input. My ford F1 50 does just fine for restoration work. I am in downtown Denver in a tight urban environment, no way a large 26 foot vehicle would work for daily activities. I also should say that this may not be my last GMC so I may do better for the full motorhome restoration one with a better starting point. But motorhome seems the right thing to do.
I should also add that the thrill of getting this back on the road in one form or another is very high and so much fun. I do not expect any return on investment on this one. The rental homes I own do just fine for that. This is purely a hobby and I find it so much fun to learn about a new world of restoration.
Going to try to post some pictures so they come up in text

Snowy this morning. Need to get it sealed. The mouse inside was just fine.

These were my GMC 40' busses. All aluminum built like an airplane with no frame rails. Detroit Diesel 8V-71 engines. Could seat 53 people.

Finally a picture of the interior of the 1976 Airstream Safari I redid many years ago. This photo inspires me to finish it out and get to work on the project.

Got to work cleaning out the inside today and seeing it all open and full of possibilities! The inside seems big now and plenty of space for the booths I want to build.
My tentative plan for the interior is to put a big convertible booth in the back, one behind the driver, then a few benches around. A similar layout as many but with no kitchen.
I think I will make it like a limo with seating for 15 but then the booths and benches can be beds as well. Then we could use it for RVing if we wanted to. The limo designation means I can Wright off everything I pay for in fix up costs since I will associate it with my business.
The engine is missing the carb and it looks like mice have been in it. Will need a mechanic to give me some advice here. I did read on the valve cover that it is a 455. I was unsure of which engine I had at first since 1977 was the change over year. Since it is #405 built that year, I guess they were still using the big one.

Can you take a close-up picture of those seat belts behind the driver's seat and explain how they are attached to the wall, please? I want to remove the dinette behind the driver's seat in a 23' model and install a davo/bunk and would like to include seat belts the way they would have been done if OEM.

I don't have the close up pic of the seat belt attachment but I can tell you mine were attached using 1 bolt for the 2 belts in the center of the sofa/couch/davo/whatever it is and the same setup for the singles on each end. The bolt goes through both vertical frame members and the belt(s) are in the space between the frame. Don't remember a spacer to tighten down on between the frame members so it must have been a self locking nut on the bolt.

John,

Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum...

You sure are starting off with a clean slate.

One thing I will caution you about is that the Rochester that is used in the motorhome is not the same as any other. I have no specifics (unfortunately), but the fact has been reported a few times. There is some hope. If you do a search here, you will find that someone used a Holly by some number and a few have fit the inclusive throttle body injection systems.

You have several choices for the replacement airsprings (airbags). I will not go into them here because I have only had experience with one of them. If you search out the replacements for the OE, you will probably be convinced to look at the others that are discussed here. The repops are not a good deal.

I see that you did find the sigfile place and that is a real good start. Please add a geographic reference. Only half of those that show up here read this as a forum. The other half get it as e-mail and they don't get to see the header that says "Denver". You have mentioned it enough, but don't expect anybody to remember it. Very few that are here also read Facebook.

This is an amazing community of helpful and supportive people. Even if you aren't building the coach to be a traveler, they will provide advice as assistance as they can. As I liken them to the watermen that are my world, I like to welcome new owners much as we welcome a new owner there. So,

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Welcome John
