I just missed a phone call from an 855 area code. I can't find an 855 area listed anywhere.
I don't want to call back if this is another nigerian prince. Anybody got a clue?

We, here in Europe often get calls from:"Micrrrrosoft Assist Deparrrrtment"

"You have prrrroblems with yourrrrr windows computerrrrr, we help ..... "

Ohhh ye they help you ... From good to bad.
But When I have much time on hand, I play it, as if I am doing all the things they advise, even giving them a fake emailadress.
And at the end, as they repeatly ask to open the mail en click on the attached file, I asked ... Must I startup the PC now or can I do it later ...

They don't like that at all, heard some nice azian cursing ...

Ten years ago we had an exchange student from South Korea.

I answered the phone, abruptly hung up and asked him "Won-Jun, do you get telemarketing from Indians who can barely speak English"

He said "no"

We get calls from Chinese who can barely speak Korean.

I try to waste as much of their time as possible before they give up and leave. They're in a boiler room, paid on results. If they're kept long enough without results they're fired or leave. Cost them money and they go away.

I've strung them along a few times too, just for fun when I had nothing
better to do. But 99+% of the time, they get about 3 words out before I
hang up.

I have a electronic device. It is an answering machine. It caller I.D.'s
all incoming traffic. I let it answer everything. If I choose to respond,
it is MY CHOICE. Phones are supposed to be a convenience in our lives, not
a distraction. I don't get much of that stuff on my cell phone, but, I
limit who knows that number.

We also try not to answer unknown phone numbers unless messages are left. However, sometimes I answer in German - haven't found any scammers that speak that yet. Like the Internet scammers, it's a shame that criminals use a potentially wonderful information source and make it harder to use safely.

There is a FREE (NO ads, NO cost) service which will intercept virtually 100% of all robocalls and telemarketing calls on the first ring and immediately disconnect them from your landline, VOIP line, and cellular (Iphone and soon Android) calls. Many (maybe most?) phone systems are able to use this service. We have been using the service at home (Comcast XFINITY voip)for about two years now and have not received a single nuisance call of the covered types since we signed up and as far as I can tell, we have never had any normal calls blocked. We receive several (one to five) one ring calls virtually everyday indicating that NOMOROBO is doing an excellent job for us. This service is one of the very few recommendations I routinely pass on to friends and family. NOMOROBO will require only your email address (for confirmation) - use a throwaway address if you wish, plus the phone number for which you wish to add the blocking service - that's all you need to do.

The NOMOROBO webpage address is:
https://www.nomorobo.com/

There is a fee for IPhones. Only free for VOiP "landline" services like Vonage Comcast, etc. Not even available for "classic" landlines that are copper wire based. Android compatibility "coming soon".

I would guess most of the curmudgeons here have copper wire landlines. I happen to have Vonage, but haven't signed up. I have been using the individual number block feature and only need to block about one additional number a month. Currently have 17 numbers blocked. It will be another three years before I use up my allowance of blocked numbers and need to start unblocking numbers to add new ones. Or I can start using Nomorobo. Every unrecognized number goes to the answering machine. If their number comes up more than once without leaving a message, it gets blocked. That system has been working for me for over two years, with an average of less than one persistent scammer needing to be blocked per month.

We have a VOiP line with out broadband carrier, and I tried to set this up when I first heard about it, but something failed.
I went at it again to day and got it. Since about noon, it has grabbed three calls.

Wow, the only language I ever learned to speak is Korean and I haven't used it for almost 50 years. I doubt I could ever carry on a conversation if they were to respond to my greeting.

Yoboseyo

I wonder how they would respond to that.
