This was posted on my SOB board. I have not verified it but did go ahead and order a lifetime senior pass through the USGS website for $20 bucks. You have to take a photo or scan proof of ID like a drivers license before it will be processed. Easy peazy. Whole process took 10 minutes.

_______________

The House of Representatives just passed HR4680 http://tinyurl.com/zo2hl6f that will, if the Senate passes it, change the $10 lifetime Senior Pass to cost the same as the annual America the Beautiful Pass, which is currently $80 for a year. The companion bill in the Senate is S2257 - http://tinyurl.com/h582fdb .

Both bills have bipartisan support so the legislation could be on the President's desk by the end of the week, and probably be signed and effective immediately.

Since it was in the law that current Senior Passes are good for life, the one you have will probably still be good. But if you don't have one yet, now is the time to buy at the $10/life rate. You can get one at a National Park, at offices of the USFS, BLM and BOR, at some NWRs, and at USACE (COE) rec sites.

You can also buy one using the USGS online store, but hurry. See: https://store.usgs.gov/pass/senior.html . Applicants must fill out the Online Application and upload proof of residency and age. This may be done by photographing your document and uploading it to the order. You will need to provide a credit card payment of $20.00 ($10.00 fee for the Senior Pass, and an additional $10.00 document processing fee). Once the documentation is verified and payment is received, a pass, with the pass owner's name pre-printed on it, will be issued to the applicant. If you cannot order a Senior pass online, you can submit a Paper Application by mail to the USGS using the paper application and enclosing the same documents and $20 fee.

Thanks for posting this Kerry. Did it online with no hitches. The upload link appears after you go past the credit card page.

For those of us who are not quite seniors yet...
Dos this mean that lifetime passes will still be available at the $80 cost, or does it mean that even seniors will have to pay $80 per year?

" available to any U.S. citizen or person residing in the United States who is 62 years of age or older for:

a period of 12 months from the date of issuance at a cost of $20; and
the lifetime of the passholder at a cost (currently $10) equal to the cost of the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass."

I read it as $80 for a lifetime pass.

RC, I read it differently: Quote:
What is the Senior Pass?

A $10.00 lifetime pass that provides access to more than 2,000 recreation sites managed by five Federal agencies, with up to 100% of the proceeds being used to improve and enhance visitor recreation services.

It ends up being 20 bucks after the online fee and the credit charge fee. If you go to one of the places you can get it in person it's only 10 but that isn't an option for me. I don't know if the new bill, if it is approved, will have a future implementation date but I expect it will. It's not good EVERYWHERE. When Ken Henderson and I were at Mt. Rushmore, there was a sign at the parking lot saying it was not accepted.

If you dig into it, it is only promised to be good at National Parks. Things that are titled as National Monuments are not included and this is a surprising number. The only reason we have it is for the COE campgrounds that we use about once a season. The COE crampgrounds just aren't in places that we go. If you are going "camping" (A motorhome with the comfort of a GMC is not) they might be more use. We usually are only looking for a place to spend the night.

Louise & I happened to pick up one each last year at a n. park. We'd misplaced our old passes and at $10 each it was still cheaper than paying admission for us and guests. On the back of mine, other than "National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass" header, the departments listed are Fish & Wildlife, Forest Serv, BLM, NPS, and Bureau of Reclamation. ACE isn't mentioned specifically.

I just paid $10 for a senior (62 and older) LIFETIME America the Beautiful pass upon entering the Lake Mead Recreation Area yesterday. It's normally $20 per day. This day pass is good for access to all Federal lands and National parks free of charge.

LTVA's such as La Posa in Quartzsite are $180/7 months or $40/14 days...a pretty good deal, since they usually have extra amenities from those free 14 day dispersed camping areas, such as improved roads, vault toilets, fresh water and rv dump facilities.
