I'll share an bit bout myself. I was 2 and some change when my coach rolled off the assembly line.

I missed most of the 70s to lack of memory or other distractions, but have come to respect a lot of music from the time.

Country was country, rock was rock, reggae was acceptable, disco is still not acceptable, punk rock was making its way across the pond, and electronic and new wave were right around the corner.

So, just for kicks, name a favorite song from the year your coach was made.

Maybe I'll get motivated and make a playlist or cd to send out.

Go!

I carry the first three Dr Hook albums with me on CD. Note, 'Sylvia's Mother' was released in '72, predating the GMCs. For a bit of history about the song, http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=4300
.
Both of my coaches are '76 models, favoring 'Tonight's The Night', 'Dream Weaver', 'Take It To The Limit', 'Shannon', 'Convoy', 'Only Sixteen' and a couple others. I have eclectic tastes, no particular fave.

That's a tough choice, but after reviewing Billboard's top 100 from 1973, I'd have to choose Kodachrome, Paul Simon...I was 5 years old, but about 20 of these songs are on my regular play list...

Although I have a '78, I am going to go with a song that was released in late 1977. That song is "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" by Meatloaf. There were several songs that I really liked in 1978,but most of them were disco(MacArthurs Park, I Love the Night Life, etc)and now I can't listen to them. WHAT WAS I THINKING???? Must have had something to do with chasing girls.

Sam, the BWD's kennel name is 'Rebel Ridge Ramblin' Man'. The whole litter was named for Allman Brother's songs. The other boy is 'Midnight Rider'.

My coach is a 1977 model year built in October of '76. Two months earlier in August of '76 after finishing high-school, a couple buddies and I "borrowed" my dad's new 1976 GMC pickup, rented a slide-in camper, installed a cassette deck and drove to the west coast and back over a 3 week period.
We had a couple of cassettes that we wore out on that trip. One had SuperTramp's Crime of the Century album on one side and Crisis? What Crisis on the other side. The other cassette had Gary Wright's The Dream Weaver album and the other side was filled with Eagle's hits up to that time.
It was an auto-reversing cassette deck that just kept playing A-side then B -side till we changed the tape. It was a great time.
I have those same albums on a Ipod we plug into The Murray's radio.. brings back memories of that trip.

When I was 3 or 4 I had the urban cowboy soundtrack on 8 track. That song was on it. I imagine he was singing about lion eyes. Because there ain't no way to hide your lion eyes.

When the top 100 songs of the year has Shaun Cassidy in it, that tells me it's a TERRIBLE year for pop music....
Where's the Allmans, Skynyrd (besides what's your name, and a plane crash), SRV, and Van Halen? That's my chart..

1978. The legendary rock band Cheap Trick released their third album, Heaven Tonight, which reached number 11 on the Bill Board Charts. The first song on the album was the Rock anthem "Surrender". You might remember the lyrics "Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright, they just seem a little bit weird, Surrender but don't give yourself away" Cheap Trick's tag line is "On Tour since 74", so they covered most of the GMC years. Cheap Trick has a close GMC connection as they used a couple of GMC Motor Homes as tour buses in the 70's. I have an autographed picture of the band standing in front of their 1978 GMC Royale outside the LA Colosseum on the opening night of their 1979 tour where they opened for the band KISS. It was the Kiss tour that put them on the map. Hall of fame members in 2016. I have been a big fan of the band since around 1975. I asked the lead singer, Robin Zander about the GMC and he said it brought back fond memories, "if that motor home could talk" What are the odds that my 1978 Royale belonged to the band? They chose the GMC Motor Home because it was "Ultra Cool" and projected a successful image for a young band.

What about Billy Joel's "The Stranger", funky yet still rockin'. How about The Kinks "A Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy" or Rush's "Closer To The Heart". I could go on and on about a lot of great music from the 70's regardless of if it was popular or not. It's hard to really pick from such a great musical era. Coming from someone who shifted from rock to "thrash punk" in the 80's due to rock's "glam phase" or M-TV's demise of the "Radio Star". Music is for the ears and not the eyes in my opinion. Tom Petty would have probably failed in todays music industry. Makes me wonder what we have missed from artists who actually have musical talent and not an uncle in the industry or just a pretty face. If you can find the time watch the documentary "The Day The Music Died" on Netflix and let me know what you think. Music should stay artful in an audible sense and not visually. I'm not trying to offend anybody but todays music seems to lack creativity, collaboration and dynamics. If there's any suggestions on new music that's worth listening to it would be refreshing. I prefer music with analog instrumentation but also try to keep an open mind to new musical styles and genres.

I was 14 in 1975 and it was a pivotal year for me. I took the buss from Tulsa to Norman, about two hours... to visit my big brother who was attending The University of Oklahoma or OU as it's known. He and his dorm mates took me along to the theater to see the movie "Tommy". Some beer was consumed in the car before entering the theater, something I was not all that experienced with. I was about as 'out there' as I'd ever been... and this movie, well, what can I say... it blew my mind ...and changed the course of my life forever.

I had been listening to The Who prior to the move experience, but upon returning home from that weekend I got every Who album available and listened to them intently. The album "Who's Next" became the soundtrack to my life in 1975 and I've played it more than any album I own. It continues to be in permanent rotation... https://youtu.be/pz6H8WAz7aA The song "Bargain" from the album Who's Next would be the song that stuck in my soul the deepest... https://youtu.be/pz6H8WAz7aA?t=5m8s

My coach is from 1975 as is the movie "Tommy" along with its soundtrack. My favorite song, was of course, Pinball Wizard. This TV performance of the album version while obviously synced, is really cool. https://youtu.be/7n--XqizDjY Here is the version from the movie complete with Elton John taking the lead vocal duties! https://youtu.be/DthtDjhqVOU

While there are other songs from 75 that I could point to as my favorites, but none of them could replace that movie experience and the song Pinball Wizard! Now I'm hard at work becoming a GMC Wizard... don't hear no buzzers or bells!

Based on your statement above, have you listened to anything by Beck? He's been around since the early 90s, but "Morning Phase" won the Grammy for album of the year in 2015. Was kind of an upset at the time, as he's more of an indie artist, and the Grammy's seem to have become more of a popularity contest. IMO, it's musical enough to sit down and listen to, but still fun to fire up on a roadtrip or while working on your favorite car or coach. I actually just got back last night from a GMC trip to Fayetteville, Arkansas, and gave it a couple listens on the way.

Unlike most modern artists, Beck writes his own songs, plays many different instruments, and composes and plays songs from nearly every genre... Rock, pop, blues, country, funk, rap you name it...

Morning Phase is one of his more mellow albums if you like that sort of thing, but has some great performances...

I like "Blackbird Chain" quite a bit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEBTGup_n8s&index=9&list=PLaWnVjluziPSwUHEL0-M4WMPpoGOrN672

If my ears serve, I hear an acoustic, blues electric and lap steel guitars, a piano, glockenspiel, electric bass, drums, and a small string ensemble... No small feat for what sounds to me to be a pop song. Beck's father is David Campbell the string composer/arranger. He contributed the strings to this and several other of his son's albums, as well as a ton of other albums, movies, etc. I really like towards the end of the song where the slide steel and string ensemble play off of one another. It's and an unusual pairing of sounds that I can't say I remember hearing very often, but man, it works really well to my ears.

"Say Goodbye" is good too... Kind of a southern rock, bluegrassy kind of song... "Turn Away" has a sort of Simon and Garfunkel kind of sound... It's one of the few albums I like listening to beginning to end.

Here's a link to the full album on youtube if you want to give a listen...

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaWnVjluziPSwUHEL0-M4WMPpoGOrN672

Oh, and to tie this back to the 70s theme of this thread, Beck's married to Marissa Ribisi... She played the redhead in "Dazed and Confused" that Matthew McConaughey
ends up with Wink
