Just for the record, I have been using the GMC a little. We belong to a
small club called "Alabama Happy Travelers", along with at least 5 other
GMCers. On the 11th SHE and I joined them in Foley, AL. HER primary
interest, like that of the other 10 or so women's, was the fact that Foley
is THE shopping center for the SE US -- more outlet malls than any man EVER
wants to see. Along with Lamberts, the restaurant known for delivering
dinner rolls by air from across the room (we'd been so didn't have to go).
Very nice, uneventful trip.

After we got home, I still had itchy feet and NO doctors' appointments all
week, so I headed back south, alone.

Enroute, I stopped west of Blakely, GA to check the status of a GMC I've
known for 18+ years. Shortly after I bought mine, I found a brown '73 26'
under an oak tree, beside a couple of old SOB's, a double-wide trailer, a
40' aluminum barge, and a BIG pole barn -- along with lots of miscellaneous
farm equipment in various states of repair. The garrulous owner was badly
afflicted with diabetes and obviously no longer able to work on anything.
But he had big plans for refurbishing the GMC. He had, in the pole barn,
an new roof a/c and a new refrigerator for it. His plan was to get it
fixed up, along with that 40' aluminum barge, and to drive the former onto
the latter. Long pole in the tent was the badly worn R. bogie -- for which
Cinnabar wanted $1200 for a replacement.

Over the years, I'd stopped a few times to visit, and found nothing
improved. This trip, I stopped and found the double-wide obviously
un-lived-in so I went 100' next door and knocked on the door. Eventually,
a 300+ lb white-headed man with a pure white beard almost to his bare
belly-button, appeared. We introduced ourselves and it turned out he's the
son of the GMC owner and has inherited all the "prizes". And that's ALL
he's done with any of them. And he's well down the road his father took to
his demise in 2009. He's recuperating from an emergency operation on his
left foot which became ulcerated and barely escaped amputation. That ankle
and the right one are both 3"-4" in diameter, like his father's were when I
met him. I asked how long he'd been on insulin: "Since I left the
hospital." SAD.

He turned out to be a very intelligent individual, well read, and
interested in 'most everything. I probably hung around for 2 hours
"chewing the fat". He admits that he has neither the skill, knowledge,
incentive, nor energy to ever do anything with the GMC. He gave me
permission to re-check the SN as I left so I can be sure I did post it to
the Registry 'way back when.

The condition of the GMC is REALLY sad: It was originally a Palm Beach,
but had been poorly repainted brown before 1998. That paint is peeling off
everywhere. Which is by no means the biggest problem: Some time during
the past 10 years, an oak limb wiped out both windshields (with no apparent
structural damage). The left rear window is standing open 6". The
interior is stuffed with ???. All the wheels are somewhere else (in the
pole barn, probably). The left bogie, suspension arms, brakes, etc., are
all piled loose in the right rear wheel well.

It was no surprise to him when I told him he'd have to pay someone to haul
it away -- which will never happen. He does offer to sell parts if anyone
wants anything. :-)

This is long enough, so I won't cover the 3 other GMC's I found as I passed
through Dothan, AL until later.

I understand the windshields are broken, but are the cockpit seats garbage?

Yes, they're probably garbage. The windshields have been broken for years
so the seats have been completely exposed to the weather -- no one's ever
made ANY attempt to cover anything.
