Johnny,

I seem to recall the torque setting for said flange bolts was around 70 ft/lbs, when I did mine and Richard Waters' at Blaine's place. Seemed high to me, but considering the job they do, maybe not.

Its in the book someplace, but I do not have it at my fingertips right now. Perhaps others could chime in to confirm or correct.

I saw the 75 ft-lbs. I looked the bolts up in McMaster-Carr's catalog, they give the tensile strength at 170,000 pounds. I expect you'd bust the flange or unthread it before you broke the bolt. Anyway, 75 ft-lbs and a drop of blue Loc-Tite<tm> and they ought to stay put.

As I am slightly paranoid (notice, old and paranoid), I wanted to cross drill them for safety wire.
Short answer: Not Happenin Jack.....
They are hard. They also go with hardened lockwashers. I didn't remember those, but Blain has them by part number.

I would still like to have some mechanical keeper there.

You could put a blob of silicone on the corner of each of them bridging the
bolt head to the cv if parts were clean.

Well, I hit the Bolt Room at Mr' Louies' (Coker Equipment in Gainesburg) and gave the Bolt Lady a sample. She says don't have it in a twelve point, how about a hex drive? Same hardness, we compared and measured, same length, same size pressure area. Sic bux for twelve of them. 12 bux and change for a 5/16 impact hex drive - I don't think my Harbor Freight hex drive is up to it. A tube of blue Loc-Tite (actually blue Permatex, samesame) and when the boot arrives and I get the shaft back together, we'll have good looking bolts on the flange nice n tight. I note some outlaw transmission shop decal on the bumper, I suspect they put the Manny Tranny in since it die coming South from Neil's summer place. I also suspect that's the first time they ever did a GMC. Anyway, we be cool now.

Matt,

I drilled the ones I got from Cinnabar with a single hole using a cobalt drill and lubricant.

I found a post by Powerjon, JR, and it is quoted below. It has to do with the proper torque of those inner drive line bolts.

I saw in a post by Manny that he uses different bolts and torques to 60 lb ft with blue Loctite.

Quoting JR's post:

Rob,
Discussion on the axle drive shaft bolts has been going on for a number of years as confirmed by past emails. I have always used the Grade 8 Cap screws to attached the axles. When I had the transmissions and final drive change at Buskirk's in spring 1999 that is what they used along with a little Blue locktite. Max had made the comment that they had never broke one of the Cap screws so that is what they used. They also torqued them to 65FT/LBS. I have never had an issue with bolts coming loose in any of the coaches that I have owned.

Regards,

JR

The above was directly quoted from a post some years ago. I had trouble finding the post where Karen's writeup of the one ton installation mentioned a lower torque rating.

YMMV, of course.
