Hi All,
Im on the road having a bit of an issue. The center exhaust manifold bolt
hole (in the head) has broken and there's no way to tighten the bolt. The
noise from the resulting leak has gotten really bad.
If I get another gasket, should the remaining bolts hold the manifold well
enough to seal? Also, what gasket would be best for this?
We're in the middle of a road trip in Oregon, so I'm hoping for a fix that
will at least hold til I get back to Santa Cruz.
Thanks,
Steve Thomas

What Jon Said. Helps to remove the fender liner to get some space to work in there. If you have a brass drift. or long socket extension you want to put it on the remaining bolt heads and give them a sharp rap or two with a hammer. This will help shock them and hopefully make it easier to back them out. (thats what Dave Lenzi advised me).
Be very careful with the remflex as they do not like to be bent at all. Work the new bolts in, in 5 pound increments on your torque wrench. Start with the center two bolts then work out to the outside two. 5 pounds on the wrench at a time. So 5 passes.
Let it heat up then cool down and re check. If you have hi temp anti seize put a little on the bolts.
Not a bad job if your kind of skinny and can lay on top of the tire and reach in there.

Remflex makes gasket sets for headers or standard manifolds, make sure you get the proper set.

The center bolt acts as a hanger to allow you to manage the exhaust manifold, exhaust gasket, and the bolts without dropping everything. From the description of your leak, sounds like the center bolt was tightened and pulled the manifold towards the top, allowing the gasket to shift. Broken center bolt sounds like P.O. over compensated for the leak by continuing to tighten the bolt and eventually snapping it.
Use anti-size on the bolts. You can attempt to remove the broken bolt, but I might not worry too much about it.
Use the RemFlex gasket from JmK and you will be happy and quiet.

Okay, good to know that the center bolt isn't critical. It would be great
to find a gasket locally and replace it before I do much more driving, but
if that can't happen, at least I won't be as worried about it now.
I'll be giving Applied a call in a little while.
Thanks so much for all the advice!

I found that a Fel-pro gasket can be found locally. The fel-pro will work, if you have good mating surfaces. I have yet to find a box store that has the remflex locally in stock, and can get them quicker ordering from amazon(next day). Jim K I would guess would have some, and he might even have some there at Coos bay already.

I have found Remflex gaskets at O'Reilly's in the past if I couldn't wait
for Applied or Amazon. That was in San Jose, CA. Small towns may take more
time.

Armand, we are missing you at GMCWS. We just finished a BBQ dinner at the
yurt. Grilled Tri-tip thin sliced on slider buns, green salad, baked beans,
and home made cookies. Sat outside in shirtsleeve weather, calm, no wind,
great company of about 200 of our GMC friends, good libations of course.
Great fun.

We sure wish we could be there. Would have been a lot more fun than
crawling around Manny's driveway.
