Are failing/failed motor mounts the primary cause of a cracked starter
bracket? I seem to recall hearing something about that in the barrage of
info one gets upon joining the community. I did get the motor mounts and
will be working on them this weekend, but wondered if there are other
things that could cause the bracket to break--so I don't ruin my new
bracket and throw good money after bad.

Only if they are so squished that starter hits. I thought it was mostly caused by loose bolts on starter. Mine is surviving so just going on what I have heard. Slide it in and out and check clearances

The origional mount was made of cast aluminum .The ones we supply are cast
steel supposedly stronger so it should last longer..

Yes, Replace the mounts. That along with the redesigned steel bracket ought to take care of your problem.

Some have cut a slot in the bottom cover plate where the starter hits ---
but----
Is better to replace the rubber mounts.

The starter bracket takes a beating on the frame when the Onan is slide in and out for one of two reasons: 1, collapsed motor mounts 2, loose starter mounting bolts. Either of these conditions allow the starter to drop and engage the frame of the coach. The Al OEM bracket will break.
Replace the motor mounts, easy enough. Get JmK's Onan bracket, also easy.
